Who's to say either of them go? Seems we want to add more of this kind of player. Let's go sign Mike Ribeiro...

I said neither. Not because I don't want them traded but because I'm a drama queen and I'm pretty sure Habs are going to play smurfs for an entire season once more.

But he's small and therefore, he's bad.

I sure wish women were obsessed with 'size' as much as guys are.

Gionta is gonna be on IR for a while, then hes gone after the season. DD on the other hand is here for 4 years and I don't want that.

Even though some of the people here won't want to hear it. DD still can bounce back and have a productive season. I'm not saying it will happen, but there's a chance it will, whilst Gionta has virtually no chance of having a more productive season. So if it's still possible I hope we can deal our captain but it won't happen unless we get extremely lucky and we can clear 5M$ off next season's cap.

DD right now is not worth making a trade and giving him another season to at least better his value is MB's best option.

Leafs did it last offseason quite nicely and quickly:
1. Orr
2. McLaren
3. Fraser
4. O'byrne

The premise is we need to have a bigger Center axis and Top-9 to compete against the toughest teams in the NHL (management might disagree).

How to keep DD and make our Top-3 Center bigger?

You need to trade Plekanec for a big winger, move Galchenyuk at his spot, give Eller Plekanec's defensive Center responsibilities. Brière can never play Center.

How to keep DD and make our Top-9 bigger?

Just trading Plekanec (see above) is not enough. 3 small forwards is too much on any Top-9. Brière won't be traded because he has a NMC. And Gionta would make 4 small forwards. So he's traded as soon as he comes off IR... So Gallagher needs to also be traded for a player/package that includes a big winger.

Voilà!

Suppose Desharnais has a season comparable to one he had with Pacioretty and Cole. What then?

Then it's likely due to the same factors that let it happen the first time around. Sheltering the hell out of his line and letting everyone else do the heavy lifting. He'd also need to outplay lars eller for PP time, which I can't see happening.

It's possible. It depends the conditions which led to his success but I doubt many would be happy anyway.

End of the day, it doesn't hurt whether we keep him or trade him. Either value to us or value to another team.

I think 2013-14 will be Gionta's last season as a Hab. After this upcoming season, Gallagher will likely be promoted to a full-time spot in the Top Six, while we'll leave a spot open on the 3rd line for a good prospect (Collberg, Thomas, etc...). I think that Gionta either gets traded during the season, or we let him walk as an UFA next Summer.

If DD bounces back, he's here to stay. If he doesn't, I think he probably gets traded during the regular season.

What should be done, what can be done and what will be done are all completely different scenarios but...
Gio could be traded at the trade deadline simply because
1) he should be healthy by then
2) his contract is nearing it's end so won't be a cap issue
3) he brings veteran experience to any team that is looking and needing that.
So...he has more trade value as of now.
DD? Considering his previous season, his value is low. So can't see him being traded for anything useful. But being young, this coming season being his 3rd season, there is a good chance he would up his trade value just by being decent whether or not he gets protected minutes while having big wingers making space for him. If he plays well by the trade deadline he could possibly have trade value...
Hmm...in which case, both could be traded, LOL (should have voted both).

It's not about trading DD for something useful. No team would give up someone useful for DD. It's about getting rid of his contract and getting a more all around player in the lineup. DD is a mess on D, players literally skate through him to get to the front of the net. I think at this point, we would just be happy to free up the cap space for him, because obviously no team would give up an asset for him, as much as I wish, lol.

DD will get, and needs, the chance to redeem himself. If he sucks then hell be moved at a loss. But gio is surely out before him. He did alright for us and it's time to go.

Both this summer. Signing of Briere definitely pushes one out, and if Plekanec is not traded, Jagr will be signed, which will push both out at that point.
