We had a glut of old defensemen with young players ready to make the jump... you should be celebrating that we got rid of a bad contract for an average player that did not make the team better.

tally is still a 2nd pairing guy IMO. he will do well to give BUF experience on a young backend and maybe get myers going again. Devils do well by getting some extra cap space which although not a dyer need, definitely helps.

Love that Hank is back. Solidifies our defense short-term a little, which we needed after the Sekera trade

I vividly remember being shutdown by Devils fans for suggesting a Tallinder <-> Drew Miller + mid pick swap, so this is kind of a "heh, yeah..." moment for me.

Salary dump, and a chance for Tallinder to play again. Good move.

how can you get fleeced when you give up nothing and get a serviceable NHL vet who can be flipped at the deadline or walk at the end of the season ? sometimes I don't understand this site

Lamoriello said trade was made to clear a roster spot for a young D next season, but also said it's still possible they'll re-sign Zidlicky.

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice 2m
Also said he made the trade to benefit Tallinder, who was in and out of lineup last season. Going back to Buffalo was not a coincidence.
like I said, figured he was looking out for tallinders best interest too. lou will take care of you if you earn/deserve it.

Pure salary dump...Tallinder wasn't a great fit in Jersey and had a pretty bad cap hit.

Given the complete lack of D talent left on the market (Hainsey is probably by far the best), I'm still shocked that's all he got.

Fair enough (although that sounds like a fair deal to me...) - but I think a lot of this has to do with Lou wanting to put Tallinder back into a good situation.

He seems like a mad man from the outside, but he has a ton of respect for the players on his roster.

Wanting to find him a suitable place to play + the obvious fact that his back was against the wall cap-wise ... well that limited the return that he was able to get at this point in time.

For sure. Tallinder also hasn't done himself any good (in regards to his trade value) by being as injured as often as he's been.

This is true. He was put in a terrible spot, as well.
After being squeezed out of the roster after recovering in 2011-2012, he was being rotated in and out at random due to the flood of NHL dmen on the team this past season.
He had to approach the coach a few weeks in and talk to him about what his realistic expectations to play were before he even got to see any ice time.

I'm really glad he's in a better position now.

Tallinder is not done yet. I'd say he was the biggest positive surprise of the Swedish WC winning team this year. He will do well in BUF, I'm certain.

He's definitely not a bad defenseman, he's NHL calibre still. He was just buried by our depth here, and combined with his injuries he was never given a chance to really play much.

Uhh... Just about any round-pick would've been better than this "Riley Boychuk".

Poor management from Lou IMO.

Tallinder will do well in Buffalo. Can still play top 4 minutes, and I did enjoy his time here in NJ. But he was the most move-able out of Salvador, Volchenkov, and himself.

The Devils needed to clear space and most likely open up a spot for one of Gelinas, Urbom, or Merrill.

I would have rather dumped Volchenkov, but I guess Lou would have had to add a sweetener for anyone to take that awful contract, while at least Tallinder had zero, rather than negative, value.

For people saying NJ got fleeced--it's a cap dump for them. NJ fans have only been talking about wanting to move Tallinder for at least the last year or so. Tallinder can still be a useful NHL defenseman, so it works out for Buffalo as well.

Volchenkov is more or less unmoveable. NTC and horrible contract

Pick your choice of Riley Boychuk or Mark Adams as Buffalo's worst prospect.
