Let’s talk about his off ice personality for a moment…
I can’t remember ever hearing of a player confronting a senior citizen after a game, because he didn’t like what he said about him, can you?
But you’re right, who am I to judge.
Personally, I’m glad my dad never INTENTIONALLY ruined someone’s life for nothing.
But that’s just me.
This post is very comical. Do you realize that the hit Cooke put on Savard was LEGAL at the time? The exact same hit the Richards put on Booth just a couple weeks prior. The is a difference in trying to ring someone's bell, and trying to ruin his career. It's not like he said to himself "here's my chance to knock Savard out of the league". It was probably more like "I'm in position to lay a big hit, and that's what I get paid to do".
The fact that you brought your Dad into the argument was the best part. I'm pretty sure that he wasn't a pro hockey player getting paid millions to hit people. What does he do for a living? Accountant maybe? I don't think he makes nearly as much as Cooke, and pretty sure hitting people isn't in his job description.
I can certainly agree that old dogs can learn new tricks, but we’re not talking about maturity in Cooke’s case.
Think about this; someone had to tell him to stop trying to hurt people!!!
Now if I read somewhere that he entered some type of anger management program, then I’d listen.
Matt’s “change” came down to just making sure he keeps getting a pay check.
I don’t believe he learned a thing.
If Cooke was playing in the 80s or 90s, this whole discussion would be moot point.
Cooke found a role when he came into the league. He clearly was never discouraged from the role, so he worked to get better at it. An instigator, agitator, and a cheap shot artist.
The league then changed...he was told to reform, so was Avery. Cooke did it, Avery didn't. Avery is gone. Cooke just got signed by Minny. Cooke has good skills and now that he's finally playing hockey, he shows them. Is that so hard to believe?
Good luck to him in Minny...you guys will understand why many Pens fans like the new reformed Cooke.
I'm pretty surprised how much people still hate Cooke. He's a pretty decent hockey player. What a bunch of babies. When's the last time he was suspended, 2011?
Corey Perry has been suspended twice since Cooke's last suspension. The fake "hate" for Cooke is more Penguins related than anything else.
I remember Messier being a real piece of ****, but because he was Canada's Gandhi in terms of his "leadership" abilities and had a much higher skillset, he was patted on the back every time he threw a flying elbow at someone.
Hell, I remember it being Modano's fault for not keeping his head up when Messier did to him what Cooke did to Savard.
Cooke has calmed down over the last couple of years, but it isn’t because he’s “reformed”. I mean it’s not like he went to a therapist and got some much needed psychiatric help.
He was simply told; stop the B.S. or you’re out.
Ummm, lets get something else straight. You dont know that he didn't "reform" or not.
You also dont know that he didn't go to therapy.... obviously you are unaware because it is a well known fact that he went to counceling right after his last suspension.
A fact that Cooke openly discusses.
So I would suggest, Doc, that you do your research before offering an assesment on a person whom you have probably never met and know nothing about.
So, while you'd like to paint it as a black and white "damage control" based upon absolutely nothing but an uneducated, uninformed and potentially biased opinion, others who actualky might know a wee bit more about the situation choose to veiw it otherwise.
And the best part lies in the on ice proof. Since Cooke started attending counceling, look at the difference in his play. Look at his penalty minutes. Hell, look at his on ice demeanor.
He has done a whole helluva lot to deserve his reputation, everyone gets that. Noone is disputing such.
But he also has done a helluva lot in recognizing and rectifying the issue and perhaps you should recognize that.
At the very least educate yourself on his 'rehabilitation' before making incendiary posts which arent remotely true

It’s too late for change, now he’s in control mode.
And that’s the messed up part about Cooke…he’s has to stop and think before deciding, “should I cripple or shouldn’t I.”
So please people, stop this “he’s a changed man” crap.
As for the forgive or forget, easy to say when it’s not your career he ruined.
I just feel sorry for his kids.
And it was your career he ruined? Because the same line of reasoning applies.
You feel sorry for his kids?
I dont. They have a father who dotes on them, provides for them and is involved in their lives.
He has to stop and think, "Should I or shouldn't I cripple"????
Hyperbole massively much???
I sincerely hope you realize that your entire case is based on bias. And ignorance of the situation.
Had he continued to play like a ****** with no regard for others, had he NOT received a wake up call from the orginization, had he not recognized that he had issues which needed to be dealt with, had he not gone to counceling to take the steps to get help with his problems and had not there have been noticable and quantifiable proof of the therapy working then MAYBE you might have a point providing you knew him (except about pretending to know what he is thinking, and of course the feeling sorry for his kids ridiculousness).
I see speculation on HF all the time, but wow! You took it to a whole different level.
