Anybody who thinks Hamonic is on the same planet as a defenseman as McDonagh knows nothing about hockey. It's incredible how lost some homers are. McDonagh completely shut down Ovechkin in the playoffs and pretty much didn't break a sweat doing it. Hamonic could never do something like that.

I don't think he is a good PP player. He will probably produce similarly to Dan Hamhuis (35-40 pt player) in his prime yrs.

Hamhuis was tired for 4th in ES points in 2013 and he doesn't have the vision/creativity to QB a PP. Same with McDonagh.

I agree that McD is better, but you are seriously underrating Hamonic. He's a very good player.

While I think what you're saying could be very true, McDonagh still hasn't shown that PP ability. If he does, this deal becomes grand larceny. A couple minutes in the playoffs doesn't prove much. McDonagh has a good outlet, is good at gaining the zone and has nifty moves once he is there. Being good on the PP requires more than that. It requires great vision, anticipation and good puck movement. He could very well prove to be excellent there, as his hockey IQ is great everywhere else, but thus far in his career, he has not shown that yet on any level so it's premature to expect that. If he gets PP time and sucks, he could very well reach 40 just based off random points. Girardi isn't an ace there and he had 10 PPP in 11-12.

Agreed. I'm looking forward to AV giving McD some PP time. But I don't think that Petro is as far away from McD as Doughty is. That's really all I was trying to say.

What a wonderful deal. This is why you don't sign big Free Agents. Draft, make trades (!), and resign to deals like these.

The length of this deal indicates to me that Sather thinks Ryan will grow beyond his current form.

Depending on how you want to look at it... I think he wasn't given PP time because if he was, he'd be averaging 40 mins per game lol.

Right or wrong Torts used him in a lot of situations... adding PP to it would've exacerbated an already ridiculous situation (made worse by Staal being injured).

Glad to see such amicable relations on both sides. A fair deal for both parties + no side feeling jaded = mega win.

Fantastic contract. I think he breaks out offensively next year and makes this contract look even better.
I agree with you on the contract but to be honest, I'm not really sure how high is up for McDonagh offensively.
If for argument sake he max's out at 40 points, he will be well worth the the money we have invested in him.

If I just signed a $28M+ contract, the last thing I'd do would be immediately get married. Just me though. Good for Mac.

Stepan is in McDonagh's wedding party. McDonagh discussed Stepan's contract status and going through the process. McD said you guys will be calling him next here very soon. That indicates Stepan is close to re-signing.

Great terms! Great contract! He is going to be a cornerstone for this franchise. Congrats to him on the pending nuptials, too!

Gorton handles the contract negotiations. Not Sather. And yes, Sather deserves credit for hiring Gorton and delegating the work to Gorton.

Hard not to like this deal!
