Lupul as a UFA

At the beginning of the season Nonis had signed Lupul to a contract of 5.25M x 5 years. At first it looked questionable, but after seeing what other, lesser UFA's went for, its clear that we got him at a hell of a bargain price.

Considering he would have probably been the highlight of this UFA class if he made it there, how much do you think he would have gotten? How much would you give him to play for your team?

Just curious, just for fun.

It was a gamble on continued performance. Appears to have paid off.

Also, HF the correct protocol in these situations is to bump his signing thread, then to quote a post from last year questioning the signing.

Are we bragging? My guess is he would have got Parise money, maybe a little less because of injury proneness. Even if it are all fluke and unrelated injuries

I hope no GM would have given him Parise money.

Hell of a bargain price?

Really?

Do you see what Kunitz just signed for? That's a bargain price.

No clue why a thread would need to be created over saving a total of 5M (one could argue he'd get 6.25 on the open market due to his production + injury history) over five years.

The deal we signed him to was fair at the time it was signed.

I'm guessing pretty close to the same money.

Looks good so far, but still too early to tell.

Skill has always been there, but so have the injury problems.

He'd get 7 mil on free agency. No doubt about it imo.

Hell of a talent, and awesome leader

This.

People talk about Phil Kessel and rightfully so, but man Lupul has literally turned himself into a superstar. When he plays, we have two outstanding scoring lines.

LOL Lupul > Kunitz

Put Lupul on a line with Crosby or Malkin and watch what happens.

Stop. Lupul and superstar should never be in the sentence unless "is not a" is between them.

Is just a thread to show how great the Leafs are? Odd. As for Lupul, he's been a great fit in T.O., both on and off the ice, and if healthy, that's a solid deal. The problem is, that's a huge "IF". The guy has been a bandaid his whole career. I'm hoping he stays healthy, always liked the kid, even if he was a bust in Edmonton. He seems to have found the perfect team for him, and the fans there love him.

He's a real good fit in Toronto. Anywhere else he doesn't produce at the same level.

Exactly. You could make a thread about countless other players who would get more in free agency. This is just a Leafs/Lupul fanboy thread. Move it to the Leafs forum.

Very hard to say what he would get as UFA right now.

I do think he would get more than $5.25 ...considering guys like Clarkson are getting $5.25 and Iginla got $6(although for 1 season).

My guess is he would get about $6 or $5.75 but I think the term would be a bit shorter...teams would be worried about his injury history. So maybe 3-4 years instead of 5.

Similar money to Horton except he'd probably be offered a shorter contract. Horton left some cash on the table, so my guess is that he would get offers in the 5 years at 6 million category.

Horton is younger but a similar type of player. Horton has been more consistent and a better point producer and, shockingly enough, healthier. Lupul however is coming off some rally productive ( if short) seasons.

Edit: At the very least, I think he gave the Leafs a good 500K discout like Horton gave C-bus.

An easy 6 I'd say for a desperate team. 7? heck no.

Horton didn't even get 6m. I don't see Lupul getting that much. But I do think Lupul would have received slightly more than the 5.25m he did sign for.

All in all it's still a fair contract. Revisit it in 3 years after the cap has gone up 8-12m.

i wouldn't pay him a dime over 6 million... i'm just not big on players that have a combo of poor skating and no physical side... good scorer and solid in front of the net but any team willing to pay him over 6 million would be making a big mistake

Horton got 5.3. With Lupul's recent track record he could have gotten a little more but with his injury history and lesser career consistency not much more. Maybe 5.5.
