Haha this. Smells like a chest-thumping thread.

Also, yeah, I'd say 6 million, 5.75, good for a guy with injury history, but I'm a big fan of his.

I think OP's point is getting overlooked here...this isn't a braggart thread, this is a "What would Lupul command in this market versus what he got." I remember his previous deal was under some scrutiny. However, in this market it's looking like a real good deal.

It took Lupul a real long time to recover from Hatcher decimating him. It seems he finally has with the TML, which makes me happy since I've always been a fan of his game. The past two seasons he's been on a rough PPG clip. While Clarkson has had 2 seasons at a .5 PPG pace, add in his other elements and I don't think he quite equals Lupul's value. Factor in points being worth more than intangible, and I think it's far to say Lupul would get close to $6.5M/year in this market. Same can be said of Horton that was said of Clarkson.

GMs are paying more for past production with a smaller sample size, at longer terms, hoping they'll exceed the contract. Instead of earning the contracts, players are being asked to live up to them.

Giroux, for instance, my favorite player, was given elite money based on 3 seasons of an overall PPG pace. Do I think he has elite talent and will be elite? Yes. Do I think he's earned the money that more decorated players have received, such as Getzlaf, Perry and Crosby? No way. It's just the market now, deals are a lot harder to come by.

Lupul would get 6.5M+ easy. People are dumb if they think that GMs wouldn't bid up the price for his servicies. Almost every somewhat desirable player gets overpaid as a UFA.

I'm gonna speculate Loops would get between 6.25 and 6.5 per. Good player, needs good linemates. Loved him in Philly.

Lupul's skating isn't bad at all, he is quite strong on his skates, Your observations of Lupes are quite off.

If he can stay healthy then it's a good deal otherwise it's not.

That's why the call it a gamble. Why is this even a thread?

Lupol seems like a good player, who has become a great player, but only in the right circumstances.

His injury history and being bumped around teams are also going to negatively affect his value.

This summer teams have been overpaying players to acquire that elusive "tough" factor. Lupol doesn't have that. Comparing him to guys like Clowe, Clarksson, etc... just isn't correct. Realistically, those are 3 mil guys, who were vastly overpaid, due to their "toughness". Strip away the toughness overpayment, and youv'e got a much better measure of the forward market.

My guess is he would get about $6 or $5.75 but I think the term would be a bit shorter...teams would be worried about his injury history. So maybe 3-4 years instead of 5.
Lupul has been great for the Leafs. I personally think he is the leader on that team. BUT, if he was a UFA this summer, missing 67% of the season would certainly hurt him.

It's pretty amazing how much Lupul has improved over the last couple of years, compared to his pre injury years of course. Lupul was interviewed last year and the radio host asked him what he's done differently to improve so much offensively. He said "I actually practice my puck handling skills and shots now, I never really used to do that". Lol that kind of blew my mind to hear a player didn't practice to sharpen his skills. I guess he just figured he's in the NHL now, and didn't need to get any better. Not sure anyone cares, just thought that was an interesting tidbit.

i don't have a problem with Stastny.. its when Avs fans start asking for Gardiner+ or something outlandish that I have a problem with.

Unlike Stastny, Lupul actually produces on whatever line he is on

You're referring to the Joffrey Lupul from 3-4 years ago. Since recovering from back surgery Lupul has not taken playing in the NHL for granted and has taken his game to another level. I thought he was gonna be a stop-gap player in Toronto too, boy was I wrong.

I love me some Joffrey Lupul and I love me that contract.

I don't think it's out of the question to think he could get around...6.25? Whether he'd be worth it is another question but I don't think it's out of the question the bidding war could go that high.

I like Lupul but I'll take Kunitz' well rounded game over his 10 x's out of 10. To be honest I badly wanted Lupul over Whitney during that draft.

Fun fact: Stastny is two years younger and has outscored Lupul every year except Lupul's career year (which would have statistically been Stastny's fourth best year). So what do you mean by producing? Stastny seems to do a lot of it, if "producing" is what Lupul does.

My two cents: Lupul I'd worth 4 years, 22M. He'd get 6 years, 34M, maybe.

As long as Lupul was there the same half of the season as Crosby, it would be a treat to watch.

Yeah we should totally not participate on this forum altogether, right? Just to make everybody happy? Why do you care what other fanbases think? This is a hockey forum. Make whatever thread you want as long as there can be a discussion.

OP no doubt Lupes would get a ton as UFA. Easily 6m on a long term deal. All the injuries kept him back but we now see why he was drafted so high. Big, physical, swift skater, and a pretty good shot.

Wow...

I know its standard protocol to underrate leaf players, but Lupul has been phenomenal since leaving Anaheim. Give credit where it's due guys.

Having said that,

7 million is overpayment, but for those who have been living under a rock for the last couple weeks: he would most certainly get it.

Lupul would be the best winger on at least 8 teams. He would get paid.
