Flyers sign Erik Gustafsson, 1-year for $1m, one-way contract

Key part, one way deal. The kid is in the Top

Quote:
Defenseman Erik Gustafsson was inked to a one-year contract worth $1 million. It is a one-way deal, meaning the Flyers now have eight defensemen on one-way contracts this season.

They are also now approximately $2 million above the cap. The can exceed the cap by a maximum of $6.43 million up until the start of the season.

Gustafsson, 24, earned himself a modest raise of $100,000 after he finished his season strongly for the Flyers.

Sweetness. Especially if MAB is ready as well, I could see Mez out the door soon.

Awesome! Great to have him come back another year in the top 6.

Anyone know what his number will be? He wore #29 last year, but at the Streit, Emery, Lecavlier press conference, Emery was wearing #29. Gus also wore #26 before Fedotenko joined the team...

One way doesn't really mean anything, right? It just means he makes the same amount in the NHL and AHL.

Either way I think he's likely to be on the roster.

1 yr at a cheap deal. Will play in the top 6 and depending in his play has a chance at a bigger contract.

Gervais is probably the seventh defenseman at this point. MAB needs to stay healthy and get a full season in the AHL before they can think about bringing him back up to the NHL.

Has to go through waivers if sent down, he'd be scooped up immediately. One way for him means he's on the Flyers.

Do you trade Mesz for nothing, or trade Coburn for something? While taking a chance on Andre's health?

Healthy Bourdon is a lesser Meszaros if he's 100% at roughly 1/8th the price.

You gotta think Meszaros is dealt, and we go into the season like this:

Timonen - Schenn
Streit - Coburn
Gustafsson - Grossmann
Gervais - Bourdon

One-way has nothing to do with waivers. It means that he's getting paid the same in the NHL and the AHL.

One way really means nothing. Waiver eligibility is more important. As I recall, other players have gotten one way deals and been sent down.

He had such a huge, albeit hard to gauge, season.

One year assures his RFA status, gets him under contract for a reasonable price, and gives both parties a shot to evaluate this year and find a more suitable long-term financial goal.

Short-term benefits Gustafsson. The salary benefits the Flyers.

Sounds about right. I actually thought it could potentially be a little higher.

Good deal. Hopefully he plays well enough to be an everyday guy this year.

He was pretty awesome in the World Championships; build off of a strong tournament.

I think his QO was 950K. Must've given up a bump to just close the door.

That's probably because we aren't used to having this sort of defenseman without buying them later on in their development.

His QO was $850,500.

In Gustafsson's case, the player's qualifying offer was $850,500, which was a five percent increase on his previous total salary of total salary of $900,000 minus his signing bonus installments of $90,000.

I expect it to be in the 1.10 to 1.30 range.

1.00 is a nice number, and I hope he earns a hefty raise this year (not too hefty).
