Douglas Murray

still a Free Agent but haven't heard to much about where he's interested in and how much he's asking.

personally I'm hoping Leafs sign him but no news headed that way... much easier to sign a top 4 D-Man then trade for one.

so.... where are some likely destinations and for how much?

Hes not a top 4 dman. If your team needs a physical crease clearing pk guy..then hes your guy. Asking him to play a shutdown role at this stage of his career is setting him up to fail.

If you're expecting Murray to be a top-4 d-man, then you'll be disappointed.

If you're expecting Murray to be a bottom 4 d-man who can block shots and clear the crease on the penalty kill, you'll be satisfied.

Want to say Rangers interested in 1 year deal for bottom pair just for his strength and crease clearing; however, I'm concerned about his footspeed.

He'd be a great option on the Canucks if he signed a cheap deal later in the summer.

he makes up for his lack of footspeed with above average positioning.

however, he will always be a negative in terms of shot attempts. hes a shot blocker, pure and simple. he will sell out to block shots, and hes actually extremely talented in the 5 v 3 situation.

perfect bottom pairing guy if he has a good puck mover with him. i dont know that hes a 2.5 + mill defender anymore though.

he's a pretty smart player and has some really good size to clear the crease.

that said, he's not a top 4 d-man and i'm not sure he really should be getting any more than he did last season ($2M).

More of a specialist than a top-4 guy. He's a smart player who takes no prisoners in front of the net and in the corners, but his foot speed is so poor that you really need to hide him and watch his matchups to get anything out of him. You can't really dump the puck in his corner without risking getting killed, but if you hit the line with speed and your head up, Murray can easily be exploited.

I was terrified Capuano would start sending Grabner over the boards every time Murray hit the ice, but thankfully he never did.

In any event, Murray's a rather specialized tool that isn't in high demand. I'd be surprised if he clears $1.5 million per. I would NOT be surprised if nobody offered him a contract at all.

Hoping that by testing free agency he realizes he's not going to make much money and re-signs with the Pens.

Unlikely, though.

I'd like Montreal to try and sign him. He's exactly what we need on our blueline, a big, physical, bottom-pair guy who actually isn't afraid to step up and hit someone.

always loved Murray, but not sure there is a spot for him.

There are plenty of teams that could use him.

I could see Avalanche have use for Murray. Perhaps even the Kings could sign him cheap to add some grit on the 3rd pairing.

Really loved his time on the Pens. But we're just too stocked up on defense. Sorry Murray.

He's a bottom pairing D man if you ask me. His lack of speed is a real problem for him.

Douglas Murray might be the partner Edler needs, in Vancouver. Foot Speed is less of a problem if you don't need to do offensive stuff, Edler can do all that and Murray can trail the play as a safety valve/rearguard type.

Douglas Murray is the guy you want clearing the crease or blocking shots. But he's susceptible when a speedy forward takes it wide on him.

He needs to play with a speedy defenseman. He should also play against the slower forwards of the NHL.

Murray can still play solid defense, however he is far too slow to be on a top 4 pairing I think. He just gets beat with speed too easily and often to really be effective.

Jesus, can you imagine a 3rd pairing of Murray and Greene?

Talk about punishment...

Most likely burnt a lot of bridges in the lockout negotiations.

Id like the Flames to sign him for the bottom pairing. Lots of young speedy puck movers on the team and he would be a perfect match.

He's basically the exact same as Mark Fraser except slower, not as tough and with a higher salary... no reason for the Leafs to even think about signing him

Likely one of those guys that gets snagged near the end of free agency and signs to a small contract for a year.

I could see him going to a place like Buffalo, Carolina or Calgary.

I'd love to bring him back for the Pens but with the Cap and our logjam on D, just not a possibility. I hope he finds a good roll somewhere. Definitely a potential X-factor in the playoffs.
