The problem is there will be injuries and if a guy like Ference goes down then you're left with two of those guys competing for a spot in the line up and it will be a mess again.

Go get another proven guy even if he's just bottom pairing like a Douglas Murray, overpay him for one year to bring some size and toughness back there. Hvae Ference stabilize the second pair and Murray do the same on the third pair.

Please bring back Gilbert! He probably only costs 2-2.5M at this point, that's a bargain for him.

Why would anyone want that pylon with mittens?

You haven't seen a pylon more useful than Gilbert. Just wait until Larsen, Potter and maybe even Belov hit the ice.

Gilbert is more useful than Nick Schultz as well IMO

Gilbert got Cam Barker'd by the Wild.

Nobody has signed him yet.

Shouldnt that tell us something?

Nobody has signed him yet isn't really a valid excuse. Brunner, Cleary, Morrow, even the RFAs, are they all red flags?

Gilbert was only bought out because Minny couldn't buyout Heatley and were in a bind.

this is a move that likely would not have occurred if the Wild didnít need the cap space

Gilbert and center Kyle Brodziak, who also had a rough season, each were hit with a type of pneumonia. While neither used the sickness as an excuse, both players lost a lot of weight and Gilbert himself was actually hospitalized.
both per Mike Russo. I think that factored into his horrible season.

Gilbert is better than anyone else we have fighting it out for the 5-8 spots. I would have no problem bringing him back.

Schultz - Petry - Gilbert is solid for RD.

Can't see Mac T going after Gilbert when he just traded for a 23 year old puck moving RHD.

Agreed. If you're wanting competition with the bottom pairing, why not bring in guys that can actually compete for a roster spot. The battle for the last press box spot won't win us a cup. Bringing in Gilbert means at the worst, we have 6 guys that are a 4/5 or better

32GP 2G 3A 5P 18PIM -10

For a puck-mover D-man, those numbers scream "Go back to the AHL"

Not arguing with that, just saying don't be surprised when you're seeing Larsen and Potter battling for the bottom pairing RHD spot.

Gilbert's #s last season:

43GP 3G 10A 18PIM -11

If we bring him back, it better be for 3rd pairing minutes.

Sounds like Gilbert really was very sick, I mean if the guy was staying in the hospital it wasn't just your average cold or something. And if it ruined Brodziaks season too that says something. Kyle Brodziak always struck me as a player that never quits and always plays hard, so if the same illness was slowing him down I think it's a fairly valid excuse.

That being said I'm not sure I'd want Gilbert on the team again. He's pretty soft, doesn't seem like he has a whole lot of compete. We have decent depth on defense now, I'd say if someone can't play on the top pairing we don't really need them. Unless we're trading a dman for a forward I don't want to sign Gilbert.

It's pretty easy to look on the bright side as far as defense goes, however it's hard finding many teams with worse defense than us.

If Klefa makes the team I would like to see him paired with J Schultz right away.
These 2 could be our future top pair.
Smid-Petry
Belov-Ference
Klefbom-Schultz
Potter/Larsen

N Schultz traded in a package with hemsky

In a couple of years....
Klefbom-Schultz
Nurse-Maracin
Smid-Petry
Ference

Lots of reasons for that.

Moving to a foreign country is tough for anyone. Maybe he doesn't speak English? Maybe/hopefully he was mature enough to have felt that his development would be helped by staying home for an extra couple seasons.

Because Gilbert brings nothing to the table.

He is precisely the type of soft, non-compete player we are trying to get away from.

I agree with the bolded.

Gilbert can be useful if you need a cerebral, PMD, but he needs to be paired with a beast and he creates the type of weak spot you should only accept if you don't have another option. We have J Schultz for PMD and Petry, Belov should also provide some offence. Definitely don't want to see Gilbert back.

So, there are actually quite a few FA D-men left.

Anyone pique your interest?

It looks like we are going to sign one more guy on the backend.

Ference - J. Schultz
Smid - Petry
N. Schultz - Belov
Larsen

Klefbom shouldn't play this year but he will for sure play in the future.
