2014 Free Agency

After a pretty lackluster free agency (in terms of talent available) 2014 seems to be a lot better. As of right now, there are many quality players headed for free agency, but we all know some of them will be locked up.

Here is a list of all the free agents available.

Who do you see as the best players, and who do you see changing teams? What do you think some of the best guys available (Bergeron, Sedins, Kessel, etc) will get?

Basically zero chance the Sedins will change teams. If they leave Vancouver it's for Sweden. I say "basically" and not "absolutely" because of Alfredsson, but I think it's even less likely the Sedins go anywhere.

Vanek I can totally see moving. It'll also be worth watching to see what Gaborik does - CBJ finally attracted a quality free agent in Horton, does this mean people want to play there now? I like what Jarmo's doing, I can see why players might buy in. But Gaborik's still a guy I could see exploring other avenues.

For me, Thornton and Marleau are really interesting cases because it's basically Couture's team now. Maybe that means it's time for the old guard to move on.

Phil Kessel's status is going to get beaten to death in the media all year and I bet they end up locking him up for 7 something.

Not sure I see Bergeron moving, kind of think he re-ups long term with Boston.

You have to figure Lundqvist gets whatever Rask gets, roughly.

Damn, going down this list there are some guys I can definitely see getting ridiculously overpaid. Guys like Michalek, Callahan, Brown, Seidenberg, Girardi... I can just see GMs throwing piles of cash around.

This same thread was made last year...half the good guys on this list will be extended. 2013 will be the better than next year minus the big name.

Vanek, Thornton, Kessel all to Boston. . .

Impressive list, and nice hit OP as hopefully it is even crazier than this year.

SJ's situation looks interesting

Marleau, Thornton, Boyle, Pavelski all UFAs with 38 million in cap space + cap increase.

The Rangers only have 5 guys under contract with 40 mil in cap space

Yeah, never mind the top end talent, there are a lot of second-tier guys like the ones you mentioned who have a high chance of moving teams.

Well Lundqvist said he wants 9 million per year, soo only 31 million. Then take into account they need to re-sign Stepan, Hagelin , Zuccarelo this year. Then next year they need to re-sign Brassard,Callahan, Girardi ,Del Zotto, Kreider.

Soo its not that easy

Vanek will not hit FA.

He is either a) extended by Buffalo; or b) traded and extended by another team.

Mother of god that will make Tuukka's next contract look good.

I can guarantee you that at least 5 contacts signed in that class will all be called the worst contract in the league and will probably be close to it after this year. And you may well see multiple players get max length and around 9 per and maybe up to 10 with the cap going up and some actual star talent. If I were a top player going into 2014 I would not resign unless I was getting at least 6 years and 7.5 per cause we know teams are going to be pissing themselves waiting to throw money around

Kovalchuk wasn't a Devil, he was a free agent at the time. I'd argue Suter was a better free agent than Parise.

Yes Kovalchuk was a devil. Your second point can be argued but its 1a/1b between them two

IMO there is no argument Suter was a much better FA and it was not close.

And that is no disrespect to Parise who is a good player but Suter was/is top 5 at his position.

I didnt take age into account. Just the production they put up every single year. Give me another close to PPG player who is also fantastic defensively that you could pickup this year in FA

Not sure if he was or not but I would say with how weak this class was you could argue it unless there is someone I am forgetting.
