PP units for next season

Hey,

I had some ideas about our PP units next season. What do you guys think?

The biggest adjustment I want to see is Gardiner taking #1 PP from Phaneuf. I think that would be beneficial to our team for several reasons; Phaneuf isn't a very good passer, players always seem to struggle at receiving his passes and his shot is wild and tends to go well wide of the net. Additionally, Phaneuf already logs a ton of minutes at even strength so it would keep him more rested for a long season and hopefully playoff run. Demoting him down to the #2 PP would keep his minutes down and improve our skating, puck movement and shot accuracy on our top PP unit.

The other change I obviously want to see is Clarkson being added to the PP. I don't think there is any need to put him on our first unit but I see him adding to our secondary PP depth.

I like:

PP1
Lupul-Bozak-Kessel
Gardiner-Franson

PP2-
JVR-Kadri-Clarkson
Liles-Phaneuf

Again, what do you guys like?

All I know is that our PP better be top 10 if not better. We have two #1 PP units IMO.

1st PP
Lupul-Kadri-Kessel
Phaneuf-Franson

2nd PP
JVR-Bolland-Clarkson
Gardiner-Liles/Rielly (if Rielly makes the team)

I think Bolland can work better offensively than Bozak. Bozak's stats were inflated by Kessel.

Have to split up JVR and Clarkson as both are guys you stick on front of the net.

So having said that

Kessel - Kadri - Clarkson
Phaneuf - Liles?

Lupul - Bozak - JVR
Gardiner - Brennan

This exactly except Franson over Liles.

Kessel - Bolland - Clarkson
Gardiner - Phaneuf

Lupul - Kadri - JVR
Liles/Rielly - Franson

Phaneuf plays RD on the PP, while Kessel plays the left side on the PP.

Whoever is suggesting Bolland doesn't know him very well. He played between Kane and Sharp for much of the season and shat the bed.

The lines will likely be:
Kessel - Bozak - JvR
Phaneuf - Franson
(with JvR in front of the net)

Lupul - Kadri - Clarkson
Gardiner - Liles/Brennan
(with Clarkson in front of the net)

Brennan does have a good shot, but theres no use for him with Gardiner/Rielly/Franson/Phaneuf, we should stick to Gunner Fraser Holzer over him for the other 2 d men on the team.

This.

Maybe Brennan gets a look with one of Gardiner/Liles, he has a great shot.

Can't believe no one put these 5 together yet:

Lupul Kadri Kessel
Gardiner Franson

This is the most purely offensive 5-man unit the Leafs can ice.

JVR Bozak Clarkson
Rielly Phaneuf

This is the most tactical second man unit we could ice.

JVR can screen, nose for the net.
Bozak can win faceoffs and dish the puck.
Clarkson can create havoc and an distract some of the opposition.
Rielly can run a PP.
Phanuef can blast it.

I think you need net presence on the PP.

JVR and Clarkson will most likely play on seperate units. I'd be surprised, if Carlyle puts them on the same unit.

That 'pure offensive' unit would be a joy to watch, though.
