I could have seen MacT awaiting an offer sheet on Gagner, so that he could reap the compensation.

That's a bad plan.

Gagner >> 1st and 3rd round picks.

Not getting the second best player on your club this season signed, a club that needs lots of help, is a huge concern right now.

The Oilers, failing to attract, deal, for any offensive Centers are left with RNH, who possibly won't start the season and nobody else at this point to play topsix. We have no center in the org right now that is prepared to play topsix minutes at seasons start.

Under the old CBA If a player files for arbitration, he cannot be offersheeted.

Is this still true?

Not if you sign Grabo for 3 years at 4M...moot anyway, Gagner's not getting OS'd.

OT but any update on Paajarvi resigning?
Everyone is freaking out over Gagner still being unsigned but no one is noticing that we have other RFAs as well.

Gagner is much higher priority than Paajarvi. If someone comes in and offers Paajarvi 4 mil, we say thanks for the 1st and 3rd.

I remember reading that this was going to change in the new CBA so players who are going to arbitration can still sign offersheets. But I can't link to anything, so take it with a grain of salt if you like.

If the club has elected to go to arbitration, then the player could still have signed an offer sheet. The deadline was July 5th. (At least I think that's what the CBA says, but I'm not a lawyer.) Pages 57 to 59 of the CBA.

I'm not worried about Gagner... but I think that he's disappointed on what happened during free agency. I think he was hoping to make north of 5 mill and after what's gone on I'm guessing Mac-T is saying 4.5-5M.

Do you mean that Gagner is the second best Oiler?

I still think Sam will sign here. He wants to play here, his friends are here, his life as he knows it so far is here. He also wants to get his fair market value though. Guess we'll see who blinks first.

But you're right Replacement, nobody can come in and play top6 C minutes after RNH (if he's even ready to go for TC and the start of the season). MacT, I hear there's a top 6 C available who's pissed at his old coach/org and has excellent corsi and puck possession stats....

Does arbitration always result in only a one year deal? If that is the case arbitration is a worst case scenario for us because after that one year Gagner is UFA eligible and even if he stays the same and doesn't improve he will cash in more than he would if Edmonton signed him today.

Arbitration contracts I think can't take a player past UFA. So in Gagners case, 1 year deal is the max.

An arbitration contract could either be great for Gags or be terrible. If he has a regressive year the only thing working in his favor for his next contract will be who's available as a potential top 6 C next year. If he has a good year he will definitely cash in on the open market.

Can the Oilers and Gagner agree to another contract than the arbitration ruling after the ruling is done?

Say - arbitration rules 4.5 mil 1 year...

Can MacT give Gagner another proposal at 4.7 for 6 years? Or is it only accept the arbitration ruling?

Maybe for 1 year. But I suspect he wants a longer term deal.

Fact(*) is that Grabovski won't want to come here and be 3rd fiddle behind RNH and Gagner long term.

*And by fact I mean my highly uneducated opinion on the matter.

Yes, big concern until you look at past history and realize that a huge proportion of RFAs don't sign until right before arbitration. They have no reason to, an RFA player has no leverage right now, and no advantage to signing right now unless the offer on the table is a clear overpayment (even then, there's not really an advantage for them to sign right now unless they think that offer will disappear for some reason).

Oilers expected this. Still optimistic. RT @reporterchris Sam Gagner filed for player-elected salary arbitration with the #oilers.

hope Mac T gets a 3-5 year deal done here, getting Perron can't hurt, Gagner knows he will be playing with two of Yak, Hall, Ebs, Perron.

I still think they make a long term deal something like 4 years 4.5 - 4.75 million.

Also think this means Hemsky is a goner sooner then later.

Oilers can still sign Gagner before the arbitration meeting. Otherwise Gagner is a UFA next summer. His agent has played this well IMO.

I thought if the player filed, the team got to chose the term being 1 or 2 years. Is that actually the case, or am I off my rocker?
