he was arbitration eligible and has 62 points in 112 games over the last 2 seasons. he also kills penalties and is defensively responsible. an arbiter would have given him a good contract imo.

That's right on par with what I thought he would get. Very happy to have him back and happy he will be a RFA when it ends.

Would've liked it at 2 but I'm glad he's signed.

Only reason this feels a litte "overpaid" is because we are so tight against the cap with players to sign.

Ah yes, you're right. How long is Cally expected to be out?

Anyway, I think 2.25 AAV for Hags is a good deal. Win-win for both sides.

Thought his offensive inconsistency would keep it a bit lower, but not a terrible deal by any stretch.

Was expecting around 2/4mill but 4.5 is fine by me.

Probably took into account the fact that he played all season with a separated shoulder.

Clearly you have no idea what RFAs get in this league. Who in the world would ever think Hagelin would be getting 3M unless it was through an offer sheet? On what planet would he get 3M for his second contract?

4 RFA signings left to do
Stepan (hopefully) first - then Zuccarello and Falk.
Stepan has no arbitration rights and Sather almost always plays hardball then
Mashinter will likely start in Hartford but could be an early callup (like DaGoon has said) if things get nasty.
One - two players will thereafter be gone in trades and/or demotions

  • Eventually NO 7th rounder (conditionally traded to San Jose along with Tommy "horror-movie" Grant for Brandon Mashinter 2013 - condition being if he resigns with NYR then San Jose gets the pick). B. Mashinter has now been qualified - likely meaning this pick is going to San José

Absolutely, although I would rather see him locked up for the foreseeable future and let Zucc go. If Stepan continues to develop like he has over the last 2-3 years he'll be expensive during his next FA period.

There are some possible scenarios for sure, and it will be very interesting to see how this turns out. As Fitzy mentioned we have Cally on IR so we got some cap space right there.

A bit higher than I anticipated... Gorton/Sather should have used Torts comments about Hags stinking it up on the PP during negotiations

following this scenario for a moment, say stepan gets 4 mil, zuc gets no raise at 1.75 mil, that leaves .375 for Falk which is below the minimum. It also would bring the Rangers up to the cap without room to potentially call up Miller, Kristo, etc. I think even if they bury Asham and Powe, they would be too close to the cap to squeeze in Zuc. Unless Zuc gets only 1 mil in his new deal.

Haha! I could see how that would sound like...

Gorton: He was the sole reason our PP stunk in the playoffs, he couldn't even...

Hags: ... but my shoulder...

Gorton: See!! Not enough JAM!!

Falk gets 800k, then you bury/trade away Pyatt when Callahan returns from injury. Clears 1.4 million.

Really depends on how much Stepan gets. If they give him a longer deal at around $4-4.5M, there isn't much left to retain Falk, give Zucca what he's supposedly looking for, and make sure there's enough flexibility for call-ups during the year. You don't want to spend right to the cap and limit your flexibility.

Solid deal. It will be damn tight to sneak in both Zucc and Stepan under the cap but not impossible by any means.

I'm curious if Mash will take 2 years at league minimum on a one-way deal. A bit less of a cap hit but more financial security for him. Same with Falk. Curious if we can get him cheaper on a 2 or 3 year, one-way deal (obviously not at league minimum).

Yeah, I don't quite see the point going 4-5 years on Stepan if it takes us north of 4m. He just had a heck of a half-regular season, before which he had an absolute horrible POs (2011/12) and after which he had a very mediocre POs (this year).

I'd like to sign him 6-8 years around 4-4.5. Or let him prove himself another couple of years before we go higher than that.
