I work as a conductor for Canadian Pacific. The reason it was unmanned was because a change off was supposed to occur but for whatever reason the relief crew wasn't there when the Engineer arrived.

Might have been standard practice to leave the train unattended for this company, though.

Not sure why CNN is picking this up today all of a sudden. This happened overnight Saturday, and they start talking about it on Tuesday ??

Canada is the sticks for them: back country if you will. 5 Amuricans die oversea and its a front page tragedy... 50 Canadians die over here, victims of an Amurican greedy cut-corners company and first news item they mention is about Kim Kardashian that had a bowel movement that day. iAnd THEN, two days late, they mention us...

No spectacular video or photos = not a news story.

No coincidence CNN picked it up the same day this video came out.

The official count is now 13 dead and about 40 missing (most of them unfortunately probably dead). If a mod wants to update the title.

My father played at the Musi-Cafe a few years ago. It's just...

Number of missing persons went up from 50 to 60 now. I think it includes the recovered bodies.

Best article I have seen explaining it
http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/...894/story.html

If I had to guess I would say that the engineer who went to bed did not properly engage enough manual breaks, the "securement test" the article mentions that is in the federal train operation regulations. Probably was tired of waiting for his replacement and just said f- it, left the engine on and went to his motel. The firefighters and MMA workers who showed up after probably assumed the manual breaks would hold train after they turned off engine, but didn't happen since the first guy was lazy and the train broke free.

Human negligence with tragic results when it speeds to 110 kph and derails + explodes in middle of a populated area of a town.

The vast majority of those missing were inside the bar which was completely vaporized by the blast along with many of the building near it which were commercial buildings that were closed for the night. If it had happened during the day, on a saturday, in a popular touristy city like this, there would have been 10 x more victims.
