Sens are the youngest team in the league

(second attempt, after accidentally posting this on the Habs board...)

http://stats.nhlnumbers.com/teams

At 26.847 years, Senators are tied with BUF for youngest in the NHL.

I figure Alfie and Gonchar's departures helped us move to top rank (up from third last year).

The future is pretty bright, but so is the present, which is what is so exceptional about Ottawa. I think this stat when coupled with our record/playoffs the last two years shows just how great a job Murray has done with this team.

The sens don't have a 'window' to succeed like some teams, just a whole lot of opportunity to seize on to. I am very optimistic for 2013-14 and beyond.

To borrow a phrase from our friends out west:

"Spendor sine occasu"

Its 2014-2015 that should really be something special IMO.

What's good about this stat is that it shows we'll be competitive for a long long time. Like 10+ years.

And Phillips is in the last yr of his contract, should be interesting whether he re-signs or if the Sens even offer him another contract. I wonder if he goes to Detroit too.

Phillips, Michalek & Corvo will all be UFAs next season & Neil the yr after. If they don't re-sign any of these guys the team will just keep getting younger. Should be interesting to watch what happens with our veterans & if BM makes a move this yr with any of them at the deadline or before. I could see them move Michalek package for a good younger winger like a Chris Stewart or if they were to go after maybe Kane.

It's good to be young, but I found that playoff experience is very underrated on this board.

Gonchar and Alfi left with a lot of playoff experience, 4 finals and 1 ring...

Buffalo is exactly 26.847 years old by average player as well?

Lets hope so....but at the same time its not like every other team is old. For the most part all teams average about the same, and that stat can change very quickly with the addition or subtraction of just one player.

Of course some of the oldest teams are the best.

Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Anaheim, San Jose.

Only the Kings are young.

Was messing around on NHL Numbers and I was shocked to see we're in the bottom for goalie cap hits, with arguably the best goaltender tandem in the NHL.

But Anderson's contract is horrible! (many were saying that when it happened)

That would be a fun thread to bump

Wish I could agree with you, but Melnyk finally came out and said the Team isn't generating enough profit for him to spend anymore than he is now.

We will be an exciting regular season team, but come playoffs, 2 rounds if we are lucky enough is as far as we are going to get.

Say what you want about what Muckler did, but he did what he had to to get to the Finals! He went for it all.

He tried to go for it all a few times. Sometimes money isn't what it takes. The hawks were a high payroll team this season, but will be less so next season and will likely still compete.

If only we had Schubert as our 6th defenceman and 12th forward today! And that creative dynamo Tyler Arnason. Let's get Bondra when we have a bunch of finesse scorers and no grinders! Let's trade Havlat for Tom Priessing! Ohhhhh the cap savings!!!!!

Seriously? Our depth is MASSIVELY better then under Muckler. We could go to the Finals with this team IMO. There are really no huge flaws in this team.

We will have endless cap space and tons of prospects at the deadline. If Murray wants he can add virtually anything this team needs then at a very low $$$$. Plus we have so many prospects we need to deal a few anyway because there are only so many future NHL spots.

There is so little reason to be pesimistic. We shouldn't be spending to the cap at this point anyway since we will need to resign the players we have internally at some point. Only useful contracts are 1 or 2 year deals and most UFAs won't sign short term unless they are old or proving something.

Unbelievable contrast to when all we had were shutdown defencemen and veterans

Sign Cowen and our avg age goes down. Who else do we need to sign and are they below the avg?

What's funny is we had at least 4 30-point defencemen, one of the most dominant lines in hockey, good secondary scoring and a prime Alfredsson too.

Don't think we have anyone on our team outside the coach that has won the Cup, so we're lacking in that department. Veteran presence outside that isn't that great either, Phillips is about it.

Propsects are great and all, but at some point you need to **** our get off the pot.
Getting bounced in the first or second round is getting old, time for these kids to man up and win a Cup before Murray turns 80 or 90. Hopefully that happens in the next 3-5 years, because becoming the Expos of hockey (great young team, so much promise, on the rise, they'll surely win!) and then not coming through would be criminal.
