Hopefully they traded defense for him, more offense, even less defense!!!

I wonder what is going to the other way... I bet St Louis is cutting salary to some extent so it is probably a cheaper piece.

St. Louis doesn't really need defense... I'm going to guess something around MPS + for Perron.

Man that second line would be awesome in a playoff series.

I don't see Blues giving up on Backes, unless legit #1C is coming back. I wouldn't.

How does that fill any need for Oilers?

They have their player type and overload on it.

Edmonton trades one of their few bigger, physical players for a smaller/soft scorer.

Perron's cap hit is 3.8 mil.. Pääjärvi is RFA and gets around 2 mil I guess?

Not that much of savings but enough apparently.

Might have something do with 'culture' though, guess Perron didn't fit too well.

I can definitely see the Blues molding MPS into another Alex Steen.

MPS will be around 1.5m per. Saves about 2.3m, which isn't much, but might be the difference between keeping Stewart and losing him. Remember St Louis is a budget team.

Karl Alzner signs $11.2-million, four-year extension with the #caps.

Would have loved to go after Alzner.

Steal of a deal for Alzner, guy is one of the best pure defensive defensemen in the league IMO.

I like perron and think he's the best player in the deal but how in the world does this make sense for the oilers? Mps could actually play defense and your just trading for a player in a position you already have an abundance of. I'm not complaining but stupid trade rom the oilers

Great contract for Caps. Rivals the Hamonic contract as the best deal this summer.

MPS isn't particular physical. He's like David Jones in that he hits once in a while but never look all the comfortable with physical play.

McDonough and Alzner have both re-signed with their teams. Soon the dream scenarios to improve the Avs defense will include sending Brodie and Tanev offersheets.

It's all good though, we got our man early in free agency.

Got to agree with you on this one. This deal makes no sense for either team. St Louis has plenty of 2-way forwards with size like MPS. And Edmonton is the soft, skilled all smurf team so they add another one in Perron.

Don't get me wrong Perron is a very skilled player it just makes no sense with Edmonton's already existing team. I would have loved to get Perron on our team as it makes sense for us as we already have Downie, McGinn, ROR and Landeskog for size wingers and we lack skilled scoring wingers we really only have PAP and Tanguay. But Edmonton already has Yakupov, Hall and Eberle as small skill wingers not to mention RNH and Gagner as small, skilled centers.

Just a very odd trade for both teams unless EDM is planning on using Perron or one of their other skilled smurfs in a trade to acquire a dman.

As long as Perron keeps shooting 17.7% at 5v5, everything is cool. It's 1983, right?

It absolutely will shrink it always does.

Last July the top pending UFA defenseman for this summer were Alex Edler, Tobias Enstrom, Mark Streit, Ladislav Smid, Ron Hainsey, Robyn Regehr, Kimmo Timonen, Lubomir Visnovsky, Sergei Gonchar, Ian White, and Ryan Whitney,

Out of that list all the top guys resigned, and the only ones left were Hainsey, Visnovsky, White, and Whitney with some other fairly inconsequential guys.

That list will look pathetic next year. Even guys like Hjalmarsson who likely can't be afforded by Chicago will probably be traded. The Avs simply can not rely on UFA for defenseman for the next few years. Teams don't just let them walk. They either keep them because they know how importnat they are, or trade them because they know how in demand they are.

Makes sense for St. Louis IMO. I think it makes St. Louis' top 9 a little more balanced and lets Schwartz move to a place where he can be more successful. On top of that Perron was to be replaced really soon by Schwartz or Rattie anyway. On the wings they currently have a great mix of grit and skill with wings like Stewart, Schwartz, Tarasenko, Steen, Oshie, and now MPS. Their top 9 looks pretty damn good:

Steen-Roy-Stewart
Schwartz-Backes-Tarasenko
Paajarvi-Berglund-Oshie

If St Louis can get good goaltending, I don't see why they won't be a contender... especially if they can add a true #1C at the deadline.
