Great deal for money and length. Only thing I can think of is that the Caps wanted a 2 or 3 year deal to keep him a RFA while Alzner wanted more money and they settled on less money, but Alzner is a UFA at the end of the deal(could cash in big time).

Really good price though for 4 big(prime) years.

Maybe he just wanted to take a paycut, and help give his team a chance to win the cup? Not everyone is money hungry.

He only had 2 years until UFA. He has accrued 5 years in the NHL.

To be fair, a guy like Niklas Hjalmarsson did get offersheeted on a 4 year, 3.5 mil deal. Although Hjalmarsson was coming off a Cup win on a cap strapped team and was thought to have some more untapped offensive upside to his game. Also he just turned 23 years old(coming off a 17 point season/Cup) and Alzner will be 25 in a couple months and coming off an 5 point season(in 48 games) season.

Why would you even sign that? (From Alzner's pov)

He needs to get Giroux's agent.

I wish Giroux had his agent.

All in all i think they're very similar which is why i hoped he got a similar contract.
lol!

All teams with upcoming RFA d-men should be thanking McPhee and Alzner's idiot agent.

Makes me feel a lot better about Faulk's next contract.

Wow a guy taking less than he's probably worth. That's rare these days.

Gunnarson isn't even close to Alzner. Its crazy to suggest that he is and quite frankly a joke.

Alzner deserves more money but doesn't have much leverage as an RFA. If McDonagh set the bar at 4.7, then Alzner deserves 3.5-3.75. It will be interesting to see if he is bitter about his last two contracts at all when he is a UFA in four years.

Steal of a contract (and the thread seems to unanimously agree)

He should be looking for a new agent if that is the best he could get.

Some comments after the deal indicate that Alzner took less money to give the team more cap space.

Seems fair to me, hes not a two-way defenseman, hes purely defensive. 5 points in 48 games should not fetch you a 4 million contract when you're a RFA, For example Rob Scuderi just signed a 13.5 million contract for 4 years as a UFA coveted by many teams. Hes paid exactly what hes worth.

His last deal was crazy cheap too.
Coolest thing about Alzner is he carried around in his wallet a paper mustache Snoop wore to a Ducks game when fans were wearing them for George Parros.

Normally you come into resigning threads and see everyone saying over payment. This is not one of those threads holy under payment for him. It really should have been over 3 million easy. Even 4 million would have been fair.
