Devils would like to move a defenceman

per Tom Gulitti
after signing Zidlicky
Quote:
Lamoriello: "Right now, our defense is solid with veterans and we still have the opportunity for a young player ...."
Quote:
Lamoriello cont: "...and we still have a chance of making another move if necessary.
Quote:
So, it sounds like Lamoriello intends to try to move another defenseman before the start of next season. We'll see.
Quote:
If it were easy for Lamoriello to move another defenseman, it would have happened already.
Earlier this week, Lamoriello made mention that he dealt Tallinder to Buffalo, he did so to open up an opportunity for one of Eric Gelinas, Alex Urbom, Jon Merrill or Damon Severson. Adding Zidlicky back into the mix, effectively takes that spot away, hence why Lamoriello is interested in moving a defenceman.

Yeah, no kidding. Good luck moving Salvador or Volchenkov, though. I think we'd rather keep the rest.

Pretty much. Then again, I never thought any team would be stupid enough to take Henrik Tallinder so who knows anymore.

Apparently Edm wants a another depth D-man?

I say apparently, because MacT said it outright. I think we're already jam packed, but that's what he said.

Is Volchenkov just a bottom pairing D at this point?

What??? We could open a depth defenseman wholesale store with the number of 5/6/7/8 guys we have!

Volch should've been bought out. That's going to be a tough contract to move unless we eat a portion.

How was Anton for the first few years? Does he hit anymore?

He can still hit, and he's a good PK defenseman. I think he's actually better than most Devils fans give him credit for. His contract is just painful though.

he went downhill quick, he can still hit yes but he gets caught out of position because his skating is slow and that makes him a liability 5on5

I don't think any GM would be dumb enough to take on that contract... even if we eat half the contract

I could see the Flames taking Volchenkov if something was added to him. He fills a need.

I'm tempted to say a #1 center but I won't kick that hornet's nest.

Devs could always use an upgrade at defense, as in a better player, not just another body.

I'll say it again, but if any team could use Volchenkov, it's likely the Hurricanes. Take it or leave it, but Ruutu for Volchenkov would be a good move for both teams. Both have similar contracts, and both fit certain needs.

Canes could be able to round a very solid three and a half pairs while letting top prospect Ryan Murphy ply his trade in the AHL for one year.

Gleason-Sekera
Pitkanen-Faulk
Harrison-Volchenkov
Komisarek

New Jersey, on the other hand, would round out a very solid top-12, and get an ideal Clarkson replacement.

Ruutu - Henrique - Kovalchuk
Elias - Zajac - Ryder
Clowe - Loktionov - Zubrus
Olesz/Gionta - Carter - Bernier

With only $500K/yr difference in salaries for the same term, three years, contractually it's the definition of an equal trade. If both pan out for their new teams, good for them. If one and/or the other flops, just use a compliance buyout to wipe out the contract the next year.

I'd do it, the reality is we're going to have to take some salary back; i've always liked Ruutu as a player and he could definitely be an asset for us.

It's more about moving the body on defence than it is getting rid of his salary urgently, with the Tallinder trade we have more than enough space to sign our RFAs even with the Zidlicky re-signing today (assuming he's being paid around the same Tallinder was).

Volchenkov isn't as terrible as some devils fans here are making him out to be, he's overpaid yes, but he was left out to dry on a pairing with Salvador and a bad team in front of him, not to mention a bad goaltender behind him for large parts of last year (Hedberg played pretty badly).

He's overpaid slightly, and signed for a few more years, but he's not some train wreck. Put him on a pairing with someone mobile and shelter his minutes a little bit and he still has decent value as a shot blocking physical PK specialist.

This is a poor trade for the Hurricanes. Ruutu is a much more useful player than Volchenkov at this point in their careers.

Would Salvador or Greene for Hemsky make sense for the Devils? Thinking that it will be tough to get rid of Volchenkov since he has leverage with a NTC.

No way to Greene. Way to valuable. Salvador, take him
