Luongo would tell Rask not to make that deal.

I'm not sure Tukka is that type of goalie. Once Chara and Seidenburg wore down, he didn't looks so elite.

Different mindsets. IMO I think you build around your best players, if its a goalie then so be it. I just dont think Rask is their best player, or even close. I think you could put many goalies in Boston and make them an all-star.

IMO Rask over Seguin is a pretty dumb move that will hurt Boston 3-4 years from now.

Understandable given the vastly different circumstances.

Are you trying to imply that people can't change their opinions on things after five years? Also those two contracts aren't really identical either. Rask is getting a higher average salary over a longer term and is also an RFA. Miller's deal solely bought out UFA years. Granted, the cap is higher now, but still what exactly is your point?

Not that comparable.

Miller had multiple full years as the starter under his belt.

This deal is awful because there is no offersheet threat for Rask. Zero. Not one team was lining up to give him this kind of money. And on the open market? Maybe some team lines up stupid Bryzgalov money...maybe not.

They basically gave him UFA money when they were the only team in the bidding for him.

If I were Chirelli, I would have offered him 2 deals:

One, 5 years, 30 million

The other, 8 years, 40 million.

Tell him to take his pick. This deal is either 3 years too long or 2 million too much.

The Sabres extended Miller at around of what he would have gotten on the open market. He got more than Fluery, less than Luongo/Lundqvist. And please remember that this was the Summer after the Briere/Drury debacle.

Rask got the same as Quick/Rinne, aka the most of any goalie in the NHL.

I think Rask is probably in the top 10 goalies in the NHL. Top 5? That's probably a point you could argue. But, at a 64 million cap.....7 million per is probably what you would pay to a franchise player and I don't see Rask as that. Very good goalie yes....Elite goalie? Debatable.

At the time Ryan Miller's contract kicked in, he had already won 146 games.Tuukka Rask has started 126 games so far in his whole career and just got a 56 million dollar deal. For a guy who has played over 37 games only one time in his career .Miller didn't have the luxury of playing behind the best d-man and the best defensive team in the league either.Rask's contract makes Miller's look like a steal.Rask is the most overpaid player in the league now.He hasn't even proven he can be a full time starter and now he's getting best goalie in league money.Trust me, his defense makes him look far better then he is, see Anton Khudobin putting up almost exact numbers.(Khudobin's career SVP of .933 is #1 for all time goalies with 20+ career games played.)

I said it's not that comparable. Aside from them both being goalies, where are the parallels?

Yeah, if the Sabres didn't sign him to that deal...he would've gotten than or a smidge more from someone else.

This Rask deal...I dunno, if he performs anywhere less than dominant through the life of this contract, ho boy. No room for error here.

Rask tying Rinne for the highest cap hit amongst goalies is a big gamble by the Bruins.

But, they weren't going to let things drag out and Rask's agent knew it.

The interesting thing for me is that he got $500k per more than Price.

I bet Lundqvist's all smiles right now.

What an awful deal. That... for Rask. And right in the midst of all of the Luongo stuff.

It'll be fun to watch this play out.

I think Rask will be OK.

Lundy was going to get paid, regardless of this deal. The interesting thing will be how does a guy like Corey Crawford do on his next contract....

Nice post, Doak.

edit: and WOW to the deal. Bruins board is completely bipolar - either they love it or they (the rational ones) hate it.

I just hope NBCSN gets an updated still picture of Rask for broadcasts next season. The one they used this season makes him look like an axe-murdering jack-o-lantern with Neal Schon hair ca. 1979.

Oilers GM Craig MacTavish could have pointed to one of Perron’s highlight reel goals to explain the move, but he instead dropped a word many wouldn’t have expected: analytics, as Inside Sports’ Dan Tencer reports.

“It’ll be a good test for our analytics guys. They have him with some of the game’s elite,” MacTavish said. “He’s right up there with controlling the play and shots for and against differential.”
Very interesting...

I don't see why some posters are bringing up Luongo's deal in relation to Rask's. Luongo still has a longer deal than Rask just signed for at age 26.

Rask's deal will expire when he is 34. It ties up the prime years of his career. Luongo will be 42 when Rask's deal expires with another year left on his own deal. Luongo's contract was epically stupid.

Well when Luongo signed that deal you didn't have the repercussions of the current CBA so it was their work around to get his cap hit lower

I know its been made worse by the new CBA. But It was still ridiculous to give a 31 year old goalie a 12 year deal. His actually salary is still just under 7mil until he's 39years old.
