I know a guy like Blake Wheeler is coming up to his UFA years and seeing as the money he will command, could you see him being traded either now or in the offseason? Also lets say you do decide to trade him and the Habs make an offer, what gets that deal done?
Blake is great and likes Winnipeg but he also will want value which he deserves IMHO. when he is signed and sealed I will breath a sigh of relief. I sense he will be our last UFA deal and our most expensive by a bit.
I think he is a gem that is just entering his prime.
Extremely unlikely the Jets trade him. Hopefully will resign him at around 5M AAV hopefully for many years.
I don't think there would really be anything to be worked out with the Habs over him. Look at it this way, over the last two seasons he produced at more/less the same rate as Pacioretty. Pacioretty is more of a scorer, Wheeler a much better playmaker. Wheeler's a couple years older but has better size and is more capable of taking a game over on his own, of course the downside is that he is not so good at playing within a strict system.
When you think of Wheeler in that light I think it is pretty obvious they're not really open to trading him. Outside of a stupid deal with Pacioretty or Galchenyuk (or obviously Subban) coming to the Jets they simply cannot part with Wheeler.
Desharnais and Plekanec just fill one hole by creating another on the wing, so that doesn't really help. Beaulieu is nice but with Enstrom and Morrissey on the left over the next few years, he's probably not a helpful piece. The 1st would be mid-1st at best so not really enticing.
Our biggest need going forward is scoring RW, which Wheeler is. There's really no need to trade him unless it's a big overpayment, that package doesn't do it based on team needs, not saying they're bad pieces. Plus their contracts don't really help alleviate any money concerns we'd have.
