NJ really looking silly for not giving up the 1st when they made the finals. They could have just given up Ekblad or Reinhart.

Why wouldn't they? The punishment was for breaking the NHL rules. That still happened, and the punishment should still stick. Although I am sure Lou will argue til he's blue in the face with Bettman.

If the Devils don't terminate the contract, do they still have to pay him since he isn't showing up? Seems like more sense to them to just suspend him and keep his rights, and would keep him from playing in the KHL.

How much longer until the anti-Yakupov crowd starts suggesting he'll do the same?

I was just going to say that. He goes to the KHL for a year and then comes back a year later with the Rags or something.

I'd suspend him and be done with.

So how long until he "unretires" and signs in the KHL?

I doubt he would! I pray he won't! From what I understand he moved his entire family here from Russia so it shouldnt be a problem

we won't find out for a while if Yakupov will do the same or not. But one thing is for sure, if more and more Russians stay in Russia or the already current Russians in NHL start leaving to KHL. That could influence Yakupov's decision in the future.

What benefit would the Devils have to terminate the contract?

Worst roster in the NHL: Devils or Flames? Discuss.

I agree with that. Certainly at the time of the contract, they were breaking the rules. But I am wondering if Lou might say that Kovalchuk clearly never had any intention of fulfilling his end of the contract....which might invalidate the contract.

I feel bad for NJ fans, It must suck losing your best player not to mention losing Parise a year later, I hope Lou can get them another star.

There's no contract to invalidate. It's been canceled.

If Lou says that he just admitted to breaking another rule.

I'm sure there will be more to this story, but it's not going to be Lou admitting to anything.

I'm more curious to see how the NHL counters this going forward, with the IIHF as well.

It's just been revoked!

A cash strapped franchise loses the "new" face of the franchise. This is ridiculous.

If there is any silver lining for Devils fans(and I'm reaching here), it is they just jumped into the McDavid sweepstakes.
