Karma is hitting back on the Devils for almost killing hockey as a sport in the 90's?

Nothing compared to how much money he'll get in the KHL. I'm pretty sure this is what's happening.

Hmm I don't know. Either way if the Devils are going to use this to try to somehow get out of paying the 1st round pick penalty and keeping Kovalchuk on their team in the future...it's going to get messy.

That's seriously weird..
30 and healthy, huge contract guaranteed, one of the biggest stars up front..
Atlanta and Jersey didn't really fit his needs I guess..

I don't understand.

The whole situation is just bizarre. It does make you wonder if Lou has something up his sleeve here...just because it's so out of left field.
How would it be a CBA circumvention? If he wants to sit home and not get paid he can, but NJ can toll the contract so he still has 10 years left.

I feel bad for Devils fans, this must be really frustrating for them.

Huge blow to the NHL reputation.

Sitting at home and retiring are two different things in the NHL's eyes. For example, Tim Thomas didn't retire, he just sat out a year. Kovalchuk is officially stating that he's retiring and (presumably) filing the paperwork for same. I believe that places certain restrictions on how quickly you can unretire, where you can play, etc.

But what I'm saying is, if the Devils are going to argue that they shouldn't have to give up a 1st because Kovalchuk retired, and then turn around and take him back one year later...I would call that a flagrant circumvention, definitely.

Well we don't have to worry about NJ being a threat now. Feel bad though. No first this year and it is looking like it will be pretty high.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens when he inevitably signs a KHL contract in a few days. This could mean no NHL players in the Olympics.

Until Brodeur retires, our chances of beating them will always be dicey at best.

That drastic? What's your reasoning? The IOC and KHL are separate entities.

If he's smart and those are his intentions, he won't sign until after the Olympics. Why risk penalizing Ovechkin, Malkin, etc?

Yeah I assume he's thought this through enough to take a year off, but the media storm will be hilarious either way.

Well, the thing is, the NHL has very little course of action if the KHL openly defies them by poaching such a high profile player, and the league might call a cold-war type situation in response.

To hockey stars?? I doubt Kovalchuk wants to retire so he can be a stay at home dad or enter a new career..
Not that I know the guy, but I'd be very surprised if that were the case.

Easier to pass up this wad of cash when you already made 50M+ over the years.
