Top 5 Russian ever or top 5 in the NHL? The latter is debatable, but the former no way!

heres the deal.

he retires. devs dont have to pay him so they save like 70 million. he cant sign with another nhl team. hes done in this league. thats bad.

he goes home and plays in the khl for big $$$. NO TAXES. thats good.

and they DONT PLAY DEFENSE in the K. thats very good.

too bad for the devs and the nhl but it is what it is.

Oh well, hopefully someone else wins the lottery then.

But maybe they miss out on Ekblad, Reinhart, or Nylander in 2014.

Though I wonder of the Devils will try to get the league to lift the punishment. But that's what you get for not forfeiting the 29th overall pick in order to draft Stefan Matteau lol.

Lou has space, hell find a way to make the team competitive. Especially since they are sinking into a financial abyss over there. They need the playoff revenue so its not like they can afford to tank.

Now we'll have to watch Jagr in Devils colors.

Do you think Bernier and the rest of the current Devils are going to stick around and wait for an 18 year old to help the team 2 years from now? Their team/organization is in very poor shape. Brodeur & Elias will be gone by then too, who knows who else.

Wouldnt be surprised in the least if this has something to do with the Devils tough financial situation.

Also wouldnt be surprised if he resumes his career in the KHL fairly quickly.

Devils ownership may actually be smiling that they just saved $77M in cash over the next several years.

Yeah pretty much, guy had some injury issues but he wanted the KHL money.

Talk about a team bending over backwards every way to try to keep a guy who wanted nothing to do with them there.

I sort of feel bad for their fanbase as he really ****ed them over, but I have absolutely zero remorse for their Org. and Lou. For all the talk of how he's this untouchable GM, just another extremely questionable decision in the last couple of years.

Wow. Paul Bissonnette retweeted a report about it and I didn't believe it at first because, well...he's Paul Bissonnette. This came out of nowhere.

This undermines the league big time. You sign a deal like that, you stick out.

lolz there's a recapture penalty. But it's not that much. Capgeek has this:

If Ilya Kovalchuk retires or defects in the 2013 off-season (age 30 as of July 1 that year) and is not traded before doing so, following is an estimated breakdown of the recapture penalties for the involved teams.
Team Benefit Penalty
New Jersey Devils (2013-14 through 2024-25) $3,000,000 $250,000

In talking with someone close to Devils: Kovalchuk very tight with KHL money men. Source speculation: "Could make $50M in 5 years there."
Cue the it's all about the money money money song

I know. I said "maybe" because of the 1% chance that they're not a bottom 5 team this year.

How many Devil fans are pissed they renewed their season tickets?

What's a move like this going to do for ticket sales?

For an organization that was already hurting financially, this could be a fatal blow....

What a mess....

This so weird, I don't even have a reaction. No happiness about a rival pretty much being gutted. No pity about an organization getting screwed over by a player. Just weirded out.
