NJ should have given up the pick the year they went to the finals. Now they could potentially lose a top 10 maybe top 5 pick.

Pretty sure that Lamoriello cost them the first round pick, not Kovalchuk. Don't think that Kovy drew up the cap circumventing original contract that was rejected.

The Devils and his Agent negotiated the terms of his contract.

So Kovy had no idea what was going on? He knew what the penalty to the team was regardless. He knew that the contract he demanded forced the team into doing something they didn't want to do but had to do. So knowing that they risked a first rounder on him, HE BACKS OUT ON THE WHOLE TEAM. Gross to even think about. Another Russian sell out.

Wrong.

- The penalty was decided after-the-fact. Neither the Devils nor Kovie knew there would be a penality.
- They didn't HAVE to do anything. They chose to offer him that contract to leave themselves cap room.
- How is he selling out? He's giving up $77M because he wants to be with his famly in Russia

That's totally crazy. Lou's going to have to do something. Who's left - Grabo?

The Devils are more to blame than Kovy for the contract, especially after news broke that the league quasi-warned Lou Lams ahead of time and he still went through with it--also, the NHL is not exhonerated in this, because they were inconsistently enforcing cap circumvention. If you think he's quitting on his team now, fine, I'd agree with that. But the brunt of the blame for the contract falls on those offering it and attempting to register it.

People all about the money don't leave 77 million on the table. He'd play for the next 10 years and half-ass it if that's what he was about.

He wants to go back home to Russia. Who the hell are we to say what someone else should or shouldn't do with their life.

Shocked that Kovalchuk retires at the ripe age of 30. And Vanek raises another spot on the list of best LWs in the league.

brianlawton9 In order to terminate the contract he needs to first retire. Then @NHLDevils can terminate the contract which they will. He can later decide to play in the KHL for north of 10mio cash, play a couple years and then come back to @NHL if he wants on new deal. Nothing to stop this from happening. This one was heavy out there a while ago and well where there was smoke a fire started today!!!

TheFourthPeriod Per a source within KHL, Kovalchuk made upwards of $15M while playing there during the lockout. IF he goes there, that's his likely salary.
http://twitter.com/TheFourthPeriod/s...17872937398272

The Fourth Period are unreliable, but there was lots of talk of that type of money being thrown at players during the lockout from others.
He'll probably make more than he was going to make playing for the Devils.

An elaborate Pronger situation is what came to mind. He doesn't want to play the the New Jersey area but his contract is un tradeable. Knows that he could still get the $10 Million offered to him in the KHL.

I know that. But what year they choose to not pick is on the Devils not Kovy

Why they didn't do it for the 2012 draft is beyond my comprehension. It was the 29th overall pick.

They apparently were going to but Lou got the time frame wrong. The league had to be notified within hours of the cup being awarded and Lou thought he had two days. At least that's a story that has been floated around.

The real problem is that for the last 5 or 6 years every 1 good move Lou does (that usually gets overexposed and too much credit) he makes about 10 bad decisions.

Lou has certainly lost his touch. Now would be a good time for him to step away and give the reins to someone younger.....unless he has the will to stomach another rebuild. He was successful the first time.

He's seemed stubbornly, and stupidly, averse to anything even resembling rebuilding lately. How much of this has to do with trying to stay competitive for Brodeur, who knows, but it doesn't seem like it's been great for the future of the franchise

Serious question: Any possibility NJD petitions NHL to waive or reduce the forfeited 2014 1st round pick? Any chance the NHL would listen?

Pretty sure there was talk about the Devils trying to appeal the pick forfeiture earlier this summer
