I wonder if fans will meet at the Prudential center and burn their Kovalchuk jerseys....

Totally unexpected. Wow. He must want to go back to Russia and play there? I can't imagine a player retiring in his prime from hockey completely. But I don't know what is going on in his life so I have no clue really. What a shocker.

One part of me: Man, that's terrible. Those fans must feel so betrayed. Think of all the Kovy Jerseys. Dark day for the NHL.

The other part of me:

Seriously, which is why i dont think they tank when most teams probably would after something like this. They need all the revenue they can get including playoffs where they extend profits big time.

I don't think it was exactly a coincidence that most of their renewals already occurred.

If they are hit 3M for the next 10+ years on top of losing the pick to get him this is an absolute **** job by Kovy.

This undermines the league, and all fans.

Think about kids under 10 who have his jersey hanging in their rooms right now, their hero decides to quit on them and their favorite team.

That's what bothers me.

would be good for the rangers if ovechkin malkin semin all decided to retire to the KHL next yr since they're all divisional rivals. But the game takes a big hit.

They need to invent a new emoticon or Internet abbreviation because the ones that exist just don't cut it.

I am... beyond shocked. This is the most ridiculously hilarious thing I've ever seen.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is why you don't put that much money and that many years into a Russian.

I feel really bad for Devils fans who are good people, but at the same time I'm sitting here snickering to myself I hope Lou is happy he ****ed the team over for the next 12 years. That contract will go down as worse than the Redden or DiPietro ones just because of this.

The cap penalty is 250k per year until 2024-25. Capgeek has a calculator for this.
