I wonder if Vanderbeek is actually celebrating this. It was his idea to begin with. See what a lousy, meddling owner can do to a franchise. At least our owner is only lousy.

Two things if he wants to come back do the Devils have to accpet him, and count him, do they consider a CBO.

What about there pick, got to think there going to fight for it.

Then they would need to pay him instead of just letting him walk....

I don't think they can win that fight though. Doesn't change the fact that the contract was cap circumvention

Lou is the smartest guy in the room (or at least he thinks he is). I doubt this is a surprise to them.

Very strange.

Kinda crappy that the Devils are stuck with 250k on the cap now. As small a number as that is (for cap purposes of course) it still sucks. Plus they lose what will very possibly be a top 10 pick...or better.

I have to assume that the KHL back doored the NHL on this one, and offered Kovalchuk double the cash, guaranteed and much of it up front.

Just a really weird situation. Also not to be lost in this is how screwed Russian prospects are going forward. Already had a certain reputation, now it's 70+ times worse.

I wonder how this affects players going to the Olympics. It still hasn't been completed yet.

I would never count the Devils out. Still plenty of off-season left to go. There are plenty of good options out there to fill in a top-6 or bottom 6 role. Certainly hurts the org though.

Right after the draft. Devils have to forfeit their pick.

It's gonna be a high one... What a ****ing dick move. Future Russian players everywhere are ****ed.

Lou knew this was coming:

"After many conversations with Ilya over the past year on his desire to retire from the National Hockey League, Ilya's decision became official today," said general manager Lou Lamoriello in a statement.

Good for him.
IMO all Russian players should just stay in Russia and help bring the national program back to greatness. The kids being trained in Russia are a mere shadow of what the talent used to be like in the old days.
That way, Russia can get back to being a hockey force again.
As for the Devils, Who cares? I thought we were BRUINS fans? Let the rest of the teams suck! Why should we care?

Lou is living off on an old reputation that he's one of the better GMs out there, hasn't been that great in the cap era IMO (yes they had one Cup Final run and got smoked, helped not having to play Boston or Pittsburgh to get out of the East). Kovalchuk retiring isn't his fault but not giving up the 29th overall pick and taking Matteau has left them in a terrible position of a team with zero goal scoring and no first round pick. Ryder will get some goals but they have to prey Clowe rediscovers his offensive game.

Well, it's time they got their act together, folks. They're ruining the whole league. They had better stop running a Mickey Mouse organization and put somebody on ice.

Man, NHL GM's can't even trust Russian players now after they hurl a hundred million dollars at them...I would never draft a Russian again after this..

My thoughts on Kovy going back to the KHL? Good! Most (not all) of them should charter a plane back to USSR together and stay there.
