300K cap hit for 12 years according to Daly. Factoring how much time he played on the contract or something.

I wonder if the late player payments was the straw that broke the camel's back for Kovy. He probably wants no involvement in dealing with Devils' financial woes and just wants to get paid.

They fell apart last year when Kovalchuk hurt his shoulder. They could easily finish last in the new division.

Ovechkin and Semin I could see going. Ovechkin's putrid back-checking in the Rangers Caps shows he really doesn't give a ****. He just got married. Once he has kids, he will seriously consider going back.

Talk about watching the wheels come off an organization, in the past few years.... what a beautiful TrainWreck!!!!

The icing would be to watch them tank without Kovi and be forced to give up a lottery pick because they didn't want to pass on their pick before.....beautiful!!!

Seriously, they couldn't have run this organization into the ground better if they tried!

Totally! Lou screwed this team by giving up all that he did to get Kovy and in the same time putting a knife in the back of Parise. Karma came around.

Don't the Devils have to give him permission to play in another league like the KHL anytime in the next 13 years since they own his rights?

look, im as big a fan of russian players as there is on this entire site. and im gonna say this right now.

the KHL is bad for the NHL. its a competitor and not a good one at that.

this is what happens when players- and not just russian players- can go play in a very competitive league that pays big TAX FREE money and play in front of family and friends- albeit many night thats ALL whos there watching....

imagine if there was a CHL... CANADIAN hockey league.... and all the canadians could play there TAX free.... the NHL would suffer and die.

this is not good. today is a bad day for hockey in general and the ripples will effect many things going forward.

it would make me oh-so happy for them to win the draft lottery, get the #1 overall pick, and have to forfeit it...I mean..that would literally be the best...day....ever.

Why is it only 250k? That sucks. I thought it was a full cap hit for the remainder of his contract.

The first 2 years of his contract, he actually made less than his cap hit. So they only got a total of 3 mil cap benefit. 3 mil / 12 years is 250k.

This is a moment for a Rangers fan to either join into the mob or stand on moral grounds and lament the loss of a skillful player from a team, and from our league.

Having that said. LOLIRLOLIRLOLIRLOL.

How would that work? would they actually be involved in the lottery if they gave up the pick? It would effect other teams wouldnt it?

I really think that with the Devils financial mess, he probably felt that the Devils would not be competitive for years to come and would be the Thrashers all over again...and decided to leave for tax free KHL money

Cap recapture is only 250K a year for 10 years, so it's basically nothing.

theres no money in the KHL.

where are they making their money? nobody watches their games, AHL games sell more tickets than that league does.

only 1 team in the entire KHL averaged more fans than the worst drawing team in the NHL

http://www.hockeydb.com/nhl-attendan...L2009&sid=2013

http://espn.go.com/nhl/attendance

so who's going to pay these bills forever? Nobody watches, which means sponsors will only last for so long.

they better hope that more people start coming to games.

No. That's for 35+ contracts. Cap recapture is based on how much the player actually made vs. his cap hit. He made 3 mil more than his combined cap hits for those years, so the devils have to "pay back" that 3 mil on the cap.
