IMO all Russian players should just stay in Russia and help bring the national program back to greatness. The kids being trained in Russia are a mere shadow of what the talent used to be like in the old days.
That way, Russia can get back to being a hockey force again.
As for the Devils, Who cares? I thought we were BRUINS fans? Let the rest of the teams suck! Why should we care?
Because its not good for the sport when superstars pack and leave.

Bad day for the NHL.

But a really ****ing funny day for 29 fanbases. Well, 29 active ones. I bet the few hockey fans in Atlanta are laughing their ***** off too.

Lamoriello says Kovalchuk's contract is now void. He has signed the appropriate paperwork.

That's a lot of dough.

His KHL deal must be incredible.

In today's NHL, why would any GM draft/trade for a russian? It's becoming too risky.

I guess, to a point, I agree with you. But it almost seems like a cultural thing for Russian hockey players to want to return to play in their homeland.

And I understand that, but it's becoming such a risk to take on these players.

But when they come over here, they're just money-hungry ?

I am somewhere in-between you two on this.

What other nation in the world can offer such an enticement to its countrymen when it comes to professional hockey? What other country can really match what Russia and the KHL can offer as an alternative to the NHL, especially money-wise?

I would not avoid all Russian players, either in the draft or as NHL players, but I would spend time investigating what is most important to them, primarily do they want to make great money while playing hockey at the highest level, or do they prefer to make even more money while playing at just a high level.

MMB, given the amount of Russians who do things like this compared to literally everyone else, it has to be taken into account. It's not going anywhere, and there are entire organizations (see MN Wild) who flat out will not draft or employ Russian players. TBH I wouldn't draft them either were I a GM, and after this it would be REAL hard to trade for or sign one.

Maybe this leads to a legit transfer agreement. Maybe Russians have to play a certain number of years in the KHL before heading to NA, like before with their military obligations. Maybe once they come to NA they are banned from the KHL for X amount of years.
