29 picks in round one instead of 30, that's all.

Source tells Post that NHL will not attempt to prevent Kovalchuk from playing in KHL. NHL return would have to be approved by every team.

i feel like i know the answer to this question but im going to ask it anyways lol...
since the devils are forfeiting their 2014 first round pick, does that make them ineligible for offer-sheeting any restricted free agent this summer at 3.3 million or above?

i know the rarity of offer sheets, but i figured i'd still ask now that the devils have a hole in their lineup and quite a bit more cap space now.

if they are not allowed to make an offer-sheet, i guess if the devils were really interested in a RFA they could just trade future picks or whatever to a team for the player's rights but i was just curious about their situation.

Devils spent entire summer trying to re-sign Kovalchuk to contract that was legal instead of trying to sign Parise to a long-term extension.
Could've signed Parise, picked Kovalchuk and gave up picks.

After careful consideration, I feel the only appropriate response is

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahaha!

Wait, wait wait..... And the Devils forfeit their first round pick next season due to the Kovalchuk contract, which, without Kovalchuk is probably going to be pretty high?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahaha!

No, they are not going to get any one this year to replace his talent. BUT, they will be able to sign a couple more free agents who could make their team deeper. Not this year, maybe next year. Lou is not a stupid gm. If it is how they said it played out, he has a plan unfortunately.

If Devils had made the effort in 2010 to show Parise how important he was to organization, I still believe he would be a Devil right now

Can someone explain why the Devils have to give up picks? Just to restructure Kovy's contract it cost them a pick?

When they signed him 3/4 years ago (whatever it is), they circumvented the cap with their absolutely ridiculous contract. The NHL sanctioned them by forcing them to forfeit a 1st round pick in the next 4 years. They haven't done so these past 3 seasons, so they have to do it next year.

Because the first contract they drew up was considered an illegal contract and got penalized for it. Then they went back and re drew one up that was legal. The penalty was from the first contract that was deemed cap circumventative.

I feel like Parise would have left for Minny regardless... but all the "what ifs" must be a very bitter pill for Devils fans to swallow right now.

Kovy was one of my favorite non-Rangers to watch. Sad to see him leave the league.

That's a load of garbage on Kovalchuk's part. Sign a big name contract, the organization goes to the moon and back for you, and you "retire" (a.k.a. go to Russia and play).

Their punishment for cap circumvention was that they had to forfeit a 1st round pick. The joke was they could choose when to forfeit that pick, during any of the drafts from 2011-2014. Since they haven't forfeited a pick yet, by default they lose their 1st in 2014.

Because they signed him to an ridiculous front loaded contract that was just too much for the league.

This site is slow as hell atm.
