Real dick move by Kovy. I was told there was big news involving Kovy and immediately thought trade. Retirement? Wow.

I don't think being barely over .500 against him in 3 years is enough to erase his previous 20 years of success against us, but I was being facetious anyway.

Because the answer to losing your best winger is by signing a guy with a torn bicep.

Right now more than anything with the way their off-season has gone they need character. There aren't any leaders on that team.

At this point, with their shallow prospects pool, their forfeiting of a 1st rounder, and the fact the big fishes are gone already, it's more a matter of "what you can do" than "what you want to do".

Renaud Lavoie ‏@RenLavoieRDS 17 min

The Ilya Kovalchuk decision will cost roughly $300,000 a year cap charge over the next 12 years for the Devils.

Kinda weird his deal was not even front loaded. Only made 6M + 6M and then 10M last year but that was actually less because of the lock-out.

Lamoriello is the most overrated team executive in this league. I always felt like two guys were overrated to an incredible point in this league as GMs:

Jay Feaster back when he was with Tampa, and LL. All the dick moves he's pulled, how he basically ended Mogilny's career, how he is well on road to **** up Matteau's developement, how he wasn't even clever to forfeit the 29th pick in 2012... I never liked him, and I don't feel bad for NJ. Especially with all the loopholes they exploited over the years and the things they did with guys such as Malakhov and Mogilny. Not with the way they almost killed hockey in the 90's/early 2000's.

Trade Gionta, and sign Morrow or Jagr. And try to send them Desharnais for something useful.

Ok, just Gionta...

I'd worship Bergevin like a god if he could ship one of DD or Gionta to the Devils! Heck why not both!

Short term - Devils will hurt.

Long term - they will become a more competitive team.

Lou quietly never wanted to give Kovalchuk that insane contract, he was forced by ownership. They now get instant cap relief and are off the hook in the form of some 70+ million dollars.

Trust me - Lou is smiling away from the cameras....

Apparently Kovalchuk already has a deal with SKA and it should be announced "soon"

ok so now that all the details are slowly trickling in it seems like lou had this planned out all along, all he basically did was circumvent the salary cap. NJ gets out of kovi's horrible contract (which they shouldnt have signed in the 1st place) at minimum cost.

and theyre apparently going to keep their 2013-2014 1st, they came out of this relatively unscathed tbh. apart from losing parise of course, guess thats the cost of signing someone to a retarded contract

This is a terrible blow short term, but if we had Kovalchuk (with his back problems and contract), I'd be more worried to lose someone like Pacioretty or Gallagher. Kovalchuk was a superstar, but he signed with NJ because they gave him a gigantic contract. They'll have the chance to land another big fish like this in some of next years' UFA crops.
