Made Kovalchuk the priority over signing Parise. Lost Clarkson for who knows what reason.

Gave Zajac (who is a nice player) that ridiculous contract. Elias' 3yr 5.5m 35+ contract at age 37. Zubrus 35+ contract.

Last few signings: Clowe (looks to be a terrible deal), Volchenkov (is a terrible deal), Tallinder & Rolston (was awful but they got rid of it in his last year).

Anyone want to tell me how great of a GM Lou is again?

If people trash Sather's legacy for stumbling upon Gretzky, where's the blowback on Lou for stumbling upon a 20-year (which is insane if you look at goalie peaks historically) HOF goalie?

While Kovy is the ultimate dick in this situation, the Devils' management team really is not as good as their fans and most people want to believe.

Their team has had some of the luckiest breaks in the past few years, and now they've finally got caught with their pants down.
Spot on.

Kovalchuk is a piece of ****. But the Devils always have luck on their side. I don't feel bad for a single soul related to their organization.

As xenophobic as it may be, the NHL isn't going to panic over losing any players to the KHL until they lose a big time star that isn't Russian or from Eastern Europe in general. If some high end Swedes, Fins, etc, start jumping ship, then they might start to worry.

I see that the HF guru mediates more when Ilya Kovalchuk retires from the NHL.

This is a major win for the KHL. Who knows what else they'll pull?

This is the most talented flake yet that they've been able to attract.

I can't even laugh at the Devs, not because I feel bad for them or anything (**** them) but just because I never imagined this would actually happen and I'm in shock.

I'm going to Russia next week. (Moscow + St. Petersburg)

If I see Kovy I'll personally thank him.

Now that I've stopped laughing...

Does anyone think that Lou pushed for him to retire early? It's not ideal obviously, everyone knew Kovy wouldn't see out his contract and that's why they were penalised in the first place, but by going now, instead of in a few years like he was going to, the Devils aren't hit with massive cap-recapture penalties that was going to effect them and they save a buttload of cash.

If only, I'd take their 1st rounder(s) and bathe in the joy.

It's relative to salary. Kovy's contract was about to pick up significantly as far as his earnings go. I'm not sure of the specifics of it

Why would you want a guy that quit on his team?

In a nutshell, a harsh cap recapture penalty is set up to penalize teams who have players retire at the end of longterm deals that have ridiculously low salary totals (See: Brad Richards making $1M the final 3 years of his deal). Kovalchuk's deal has 11 years remaining so the penalty isn't harsh.

They can't . . .

They don't have their first rounder because of Kovalchuk!

When Tarasenko "retires" in a few years will the McI pick seem reasonable?

Because he hasn't played for very long under his contract, so the Devils haven't saved very much against the Cap. They've saved 3 million.

This is just shocking.
Torch the Rangers? What planet are u on?

Having grown up during the Broduer Stevens Niedermeyer era I can't say I have any sympathy for the organization or its fans. They have their three cups. This is amazing I'm loving every minute of it.

The only thing that could make today better is news of Stepan getting resigned.
