Unbelievable.

So what exactly does this do to the Devils cap??? I know it's gotta be in here somewhere but I'm not wasting my time.

I guess the contract is voided?

Unlikely regardless, but don't you have to have as many first rounders in one more year than the number you would be giving up? Meaning if you have to give up 4 first rounders, I thought as long as you had 4 of your next 5 you were ok.

Wow. This is stunning.

That said, I do not fault anyone in the slightest bit for wanting to return home.

They take a $3M hit this season, then just $300k per season through 2025. Not terrible, still hilarious.

I don't give a **** about the Devils anymore than I do about any other Atlantic rival, but this is too funny to let go. Lamoriello is the clown driving the clown car that is the NJ organization. So while lauging my ass off I say **** the Devils and their fanbase, I have no sympathy for Lamoriellos's attempt to game the salary cap and those silly, silly fans going on and on about how awesome a person Kovalchuk is and how much he loves NJ because of its schools...

Some of these tweeners are now posting about how well the Devils will do next year and how this is actually a great thing for the franchise... If I were them I'd be real concerned about a management team that let Parise and Clarkson walk without even getting low draft picks in return, has lost a number of picks in the Kovalchuk clusterbumble****, and sat on their hands so long with the Brodeur situation that they had to trade a top 10 pick to plan for his eventual retirement. The result is a wiped out farm system and a crappy yet expensive roster. But for the moment, I'm just going to enjoy the

You have to wonder about the fall out of this moving forward. What long term effects it will have. The perception of Russians in the NHL has to be taking a bit of a hit right now.

what are the chances they offer sheet Step?
edit: jk, they theoretically can't cuz they won't have their 1st.

I know this is under slightly different circumstances...but we've been watching the devils lose their best players for around 20 years now...and keep winning....I simply refuse to ever bet against Uncle Lou.

I don't think they do. I don't see Lou doing that. If they did, I don't see it being some crazy price we wouldn't match. Lou isn't going to overpay for what Stepan is and is not just to stick it to the rangers. He has enough bad contracts on that roster even with the cap space Kovy will open up eventually.

Welllll.... there is that whole thing about honoring a contract and stuff. Being a stand up guy...that sort of thing.

The good that comes out of this might be that GM's begin to learn their lesson about making crazy contracts like this in the first place.

You are somewhat correct. They could still offer sheet without their 1st, depending on which category of the compensation the offer falls within. Article 10.4 governs offer sheets in the CBA and states that:

Quote:
Clubs cannot acquire picks to use as compensation (with the exception being a Club's own draft selections that are traded and then re-acquired).

Clubs owing one (1) draft selection must have it available in the next draft.

Clubs owing two (2) draft selections in different rounds must have them available in the next draft.

Clubs owing three (3) draft selections in different rounds must have them available in the next draft.

Clubs owing two (2) draft selections in the same round, must have them available in the next three (3) drafts.

Clubs owing three (3) draft selections in the same round must have them available in the next four (4) drafts, and so on.

When a Club owes two (2) or more draft selections in the same round, the signing Club does not elect the years in which such selections shall be awarded to the Prior Club; rather, the selections
next available will be transferred to the Prior Club (i.e., a Club that owes two (2) selections has them available in the next two (2) drafts – that is when they are transferred).
The compensation chart is as follows:
Quote:
OFFER SHEET COMPENSATION

$1,110,249 or below None

Over $1,110,249 to $1,682,194 Third Round

Over $1,682,194 to $3,364,391 Second Round

Over $3,364,391 to $5,046,585 First Round and Third Round

Over $5,046,585 to $6,728,781 First Round, Second Round, and Third Round

Over $6,728,781 to $8,410,976 Two First Rounds, Second Round, and Third Round

Over $8,410,976 Four First Rounds
However, the term/compensation would have to be crazy for them to be able to use the offer sheet and get around the "next draft" requirements of all compensation under the "Over $6,728,781 to $8,410,976 Two First Rounds, Second Round, and Third Round" or "Over $8,410,976 Four First Rounds" categories. Therefore, unless the NHL give the Devils their pick back, it's not really a threat to us for Stepan.

EDIT: CBA is available at the NHLPA website if you'd like to review: http://www.nhlpa.com/inside-nhlpa/co...ning-agreement

2 goals and 4 assists with a -1 in 6 games is torching a team? A shooting percentage under 9? Wow, I wonder what real production is considered then.

Honestly it's probably good for the Devils he did this now and not last week. Saved them a huge mistake in overpaying Clarkson/

The Devils would be much better off with an overpaid Clarkson than they are right now.

It's not 3 mil this year. It's 300k per season, according to Daly. According to capgeek, it's 250k per season. There are no signing bonuses or performance bonuses in his contract, so I don't know what the discrepancy is.

yeah, not to mention he was generally generating offense every shift out there. not all about point totals lol.

sucks for the devils, good for the rangers that he's gone.

That's good production. That's not getting "torched." He was the primary "shooter" on that team. Not playmaker. He took 23 shots and scored just twice. He had an 8.7 shooting percentage. He was held to not one shot in game 5.

Comparatively, Krejci in this year's ECF registered 4 goals in 4 games on 15 shots, equaling a shooting percentage of 26.7. That is getting torched.

He's allowed to retire.

I guess it's different for everyone, but I could never just go on and move to another country where people speak a different language, away from my family. If he feels it is best for his family and his life to move back to Russia, then good for him.

If Lundqvist were to move back to Sweden, I'd be upset from a hockey/Rangers perspective, but I wouldn't fault him for it.
