This is very true.

I give the KHL credit for sticking around and continuing to improve and become more competitive year after year. But there are many, many ways that it does not come close to stacking up to the NHL, still. And likely never will.

I hope Kovalchoo doesn't mind really long plane rides, for starters.

Why would he retire in 2017 at age 33 (roughly)? I don't think there's anything to this other than he got the bug to play back home during the lockout and has absolutely zero loyalty to anyone but himself. The SKA guys dangled huge money in front of him... now he's leaving. No hidden reasons, no excuses. He's just a piece of crap who doesn't want to live up to a big agreement that he forced the Devils into (and forced a lot of other things as a result). He just doesn't care, period.

Miss home? Want to see more family? Want bigger money? LEAVE 3 YEARS AGO. Everyone would've understood then because his team was disintegrating.

That said, reading some of the Rangers board reactions is pretty funny.

They are probably afraid of Medvedev sending his thugs over to New Jersey.

I have to link to this...

If you had to describe their rivalry (or ours with Philly) in one post (one picture), there it is.

Let's face it: if Claude Giroux retired tomorrow, half of us would be going bonkers. The other half would be merely conflicted about whether or not they want to go bonkers.

If Giroux retired I would go buy myself something nice and spend a pleasant evening being chuffed about it.

Kovalchuk will be back (eventually). I see him as a long-range winger option for us.

I wonder how bad the finanical situation really is for the Devils.

Yah Theo Fleury. It's a good thing I finished my "ruht beer" when I saw that post or I might've spewed it all over my screen. One of the funnier posts I've seen on these boards in a while.

Well it's about 77M - (250K * 12 seasons or whatever the number is) better now, if nothing else.

A great plot twist would be some Russian oligarch quietly floating the Devils enough money to get them out of debt as a result of all this.

Sorry, was reading the main board thread.

IDK why that is where the money went down, but apparently most everyone incl. the league thought, the contract was never meant to be played out. So whatever maybe he was supposed to retire in 2018 or 20. My point is that people are suddenly crying about him not living up to a contract now, that they always knew he wasn't living up to and neither was he supposed to.
Players are getting waived, bought out, traded to Edmonton, in short: treated like property and having the rules of signed contracts changed on them with each new CBA. Sure this is what they put up with to play in the NHL and it isn't against the rules, but spoiler alert, neither is Kovalchuk retiring against the rules and the Devils aren't putting up much of a fight to indicate that they'd rather he retired somewhere between 2015-2022.

If anyone wants a perfect example of "the five stages of grief," read the thread on the Devils board from beginning to end. Kinda feel bad for them lol.

i think it might get worse

post their line up without kovy and ask yourself if you would buy season tickets.

then take into account that they in all likely hood wind up in the bottom 3rd of the league and not have a draft pick due to signing him to that ridiculous contract in the 1st place.

thats at least 2 years (likely more) or a brand new half empty arena

The focus is obviously going to be on Kovalchuk, and I don't blame people for that. But how worthless is Vanderbeek at this point?

He basically bullied Lou -- who hated those frontloaded loophole contracts -- into re-signing Kovalchuk three years ago. Now Vanderbeek probably couldn't sign off on this "retirement" fast enough so he wouldn't have to shell out the $11 million Kovalchuk was owed for next season.

I don't know exactly how much money this guy has been hemorrhaging, but jeez what a terrible owner. And as Pens fans, we know terrible owners when we see 'em.

Dude's never impressed me apart from his skill. He's 30 and still hasn't bought into playing a two-way game or giving a reasonable effort every night. He called out Crosby which maybe wasn't unwarranted but from a doofus like Kovalchuk, it was hypocritical. He's also a ****in doughboy. I didn't understand why Lamoriello put so much effort, faith and money into someone that is the complete opposite of what the Devils have always been about.

Never hated him, but its pretty hard to like him too. Good luck to him I guess.

That reminds me... how much crap will Errey and Steigy sling at Kovy the first time we play the Devils? Haha. Whatever they say it will be warranted imo.

He's matured quite a bit since those hot-dog Atlanta days. Dude is Kaptain Russia, and he's getting an early start on his duties leading up to Sochi. I have a lot of respect for him. This is a HUGE deal for Mother Russia, these Olympics.

This helps New Jersey way more than it helps Kovalchuk, imo. Because without financial stability the Devils aren't anything. Not that this gets them off the hook, completely. In fact, it may not even matter. But that's why this decision was mutual.
