I think Hall, Eberle, Ference & Smid should all have letters. Gagner could also be a candidate. I do believe there is something to be said about giving an older/more veteran player the C.

If the team makes no more changes here's my picks:

C - Hall
A - Ference
A - Smid
A - Gagner (provided he signs blah blah blah)

Seriously. Probably the 4 most motivated players on the team.

Seems legit, honestly. Although I'd have home and away A's for Gagner and Eberle. Although home and away A's are a dumb concept.

I just hope that Eakins and the team make the decision and whoever steps into Scorecoff's shoes is ready for it.

The only reason I left Eberle without an A is because IMO (and take this with a grain of salt, I clearly don't know the guy) he just doesn't seem like a motivator or a guy who takes over the room. He's definitely more than talented enough and he lets his on ice stuff do the talking, but I don't think he's the type of personality to have a letter. Like Hemsky.

IMO, the C should go to the player who is both a leader and one of your most skilled players. Even if there is a player with less skill who is a "better" leader (whatever that means), it should still go to the skill guy. I think the guy wearing the C should be one who has a major impact on the ice and can lead the team where it most counts (getting goals and getting wins).

I think the C should go to the guy who can grab the room. You also need a guy who can talk to the refs/linesmen without blowing his head.

Imo, no captain this year unless they give it to Ference. He will lead this team whether he has a letter or not.

Hall will wait for his chance while getting an everyday A

I've heard an interview with Hall himself saying that Eberle is a more competitive person than himself.

Besides, it's obvious he has leadership skills......just look at his BMO commercials.

I'd go with either Hall or Gagner.

I like it. I don't like the optics of taking an A away from Eberle, though.

Don't take the A away from Eberle, that is all.

Didn't read all the posts but I feel Gagner would be the most legit captain. He showed leadership last year and from his demeanor, Sam would be the wisest choice. He is well respected by fans and teammates. Hall is still too young to lead the team. At this stage of Hall's game, let him play and improve his game without the added responsibilities on his shoulders which at times can be a burden. His time will come but for now Gagner would be the obvious choice being one of the Oils most seasoned vet.

That's why it is in my opinion the best idea to give Smid the C. He's the most vocal guy in the room by a longshot. I've seen a few different times that he comes in after a period trying to fire guys up.

Like everyone who has watched Smid in Oilchange, he is passionate and emotional which is all good but can be detrimental to team chemistry and cohesion during a bad loss. Instead of a steady leader in the room, we may have a guy flying off the handle and yelling at people while throwing his equipment. This would not make an ideal captain IMO. That is why Sam Wise would be the rock steady guy who listens and communicate calmly during a tough, tough situation. He will have the players ears than a guy who throws a tantrum. He would be O' captain, My captain!

Completely agree with this statement! Hall can be like the Messier of old showing leadership skills and growing into the captaincy.

Surprised so many people want to strip the A from Eberle. The kid's captain material and a cornerstone of the franchise, also lead the team in points 2 years in a row.

Oilers should be in no rush to hand over captaincy to Taylor Hall

Sorry but IMO Eberle is too quiet, and it would effect his game. Hall is the type of player who would thrive given more leadership. Currently and in the past he didn't want to radicalize the team by going against the vets. Give him the C and let him change the culture of Oilers hockey, that is why players like Ferrence and Perron were brought in, we need more passion and grit.
