I can't see good things coming from this. They barely have enough money to pay for the team. Stack that with a lot of their revenue going towards building management costs (which they need help paying for as it is), and you have a team with no money to spend on players.

Yikes. Yikes. Yikes.

So they basically just put this off for another 5 years?

Great idea.

Still riding the coattails of that quote in '94, apparently.

Also, that Blackhawks banner thread on the main boards has convinced me that you should never update banners for a million reasons.

I think updating retired number banners so they look like a set is OK (putting them all on one banner = not OK). The big-time team accomplishments like Cup banners shouldn't be touched though.

You mean like stuffing all the retired numbers onto 1 banner?

I love it when the leafs sign a horrible albatross contract from day 1. What an awful deal for David Clarkson.

This is a kinda random question, but I was thinking earlier about how if theoretically, your team's scouts were good enough, you'd keep losing players you drafted because they'd want fair pay/the cap. Your almost being punished for being too good at scouting. So what if players drafted by the team cost less against the cap? Or maybe even not at all?

Okay, but you'd be losing these prospects after 3-4 years minimum of them competing for roster spots in the organization. And if then you just trade them before their leave via UFA.

There is literally no punishment for scouting too well. You trade the ones you can't keep for picks or prospects who need more time, or go nuts and get an upgrade on the roster.

And yes, you may lose one or two to free agency but an organization on top of their players shouldn't lose valuable ones for nothing.

You know who I haven't appreciated enough lately? Peter Forsberg. Dude was insane. As a Stars fan I held him in the same regard as Datsyuk, only a couple years before. Enjoy.

I agree that there's not really a punishment for drafting too well because if you're so good at it you can just replace internally. However, I do like the idea of a home grown player being able to count a fraction less against the cap. The NBA has a soft cap and their version of this benefit (though it doesn't count for just home drafted/etc. players) is to allow teams trying to re-sign a player to be able to offer more money.

It's kind of irrelevant with the new CBA but it's something that warrants discussion. Placing an even higher emphasis on drafting and developing might possibly create an environment where we see more better players in the league.

Didn't the Stars literally just get rewarded from drafting really well? With the exception of Morrow every single guy in the Seguin trade was either drafted or signed by us and developed to some extent. Our plethora of wingers finally paid off for something.

Datsyuk is fantastic and he's one of my favorite players currently playing. Forsberg is on a completely different level though. That man could do anything he wanted, and is easily within the top 5 talents in the history of the NHL.

The following players filed for arbitration:

Detroit Red Wings - Brendan Smith
Edmonton Oilers - Sam Gagner
Los Angeles Kings - Trevor Lewis, Alec Martinez, Jake Muzzin, Jordan Nolan
Montreal Canadiens - Ryan White
Nashville Predators - Nick Spaling
New York Islanders - Josh Bailey
New York Rangers - Mats Zuccarello
Ottawa Senators - Eric Condra
Pittsburgh Penguins - Robert Bortuzzo
St. Louis Blues - Chris Stewart
Toronto Maple Leafs - Mark Fraser, Carl Gunnarsson
Vancouver Canucks - Dale Weise
Winnipeg Jets - Zach Bogosian, Bryan Little, Paul Postma, Eric Tangradi, Blake Wheeler

Winnipeg's already lost one, who wants to bet they're due to lose a few more before the season starts, whether it be via trade or holdout?

If I'm Dallas, I'd happily take Wheeler or Bogo off their hands.

A good chunk of those teams are up against the cap and those RFAs aren't going to come cheap. LA definitely...

Admittedly, I know little about the details, but I don't understand how his retiring would make a case for the Devils getting their pick back.

Now told SKA and Kovalchuk already have an agreement in place. Will be announced "soon" ... guessing tomorrow.

LOL.
I love when people try to paint unfulfilled contracts as an honorable thing because something something family.

I see both sides. This is absolutely **** for NJ because they thought they were going to get at least 10 years from the guy in their uniform. On the other hand, I can really understand Kovalchuk getting a taste for living back in Mother Russia with his family during the lockout. He's going to take a lot of heat for this but my guess is this really was a family thing. He's going to get paid through the nose wherever he plays and now he and his wife/kids get to live in their home country.

I would be fascinated to know how old their kid(s) are. My guess is they decided they wanted to raise Russian children, not Americans.
