As much as the little nancy's over at the Pittsburgh board are trying to hide from the Malkin is next talk and hand out infractions to anybody that even brings up the topic in the Kovalchuk thread, I really dont think he'll walk away from a 20mil a year contract either.

Maybe he sits tight while the Penguins are doing well but I see him bolting for the motherland as soon as that ship starts to sink. I would even keep an eye on Semin at this point. I think Ovechkin sticks around at least for his entire prime then probably finishes his career in Russia. Wouldnt be surprised to see Ovechkin stick around even past his prime though, he seems really passionate about the NA game.

It's not even just Kovalchuk and Parise. They have lost Niedermeyer, Gomez, Gionta, Rafalski, Martin, and Clarkson as well to free agency. That is brutal.

Just a little addition to Kovy saga

Below is my translation of Kovalchuk mother's comment published on allhockey.ru:

She confirmed that paychecks to the players were delayed and also said this: "there are some serious limitations for all the teams after the lockout. They also withhold 20% of their salaries for so called escrow account. That money may not be refunded if the NHL underachieves in profit. There is also 50% federal tax withholding. Therefore one is getting only $3 million in real money out of every $10 million on the contract. That what tipped the scales toward return to Russia."

Jesus, like we all didn't know it was about money. This isn't ground breaking, anybody who follows this stuff knows that yes a player may get paid 5M a year, but doesn't see that money.

I mean in the end he's gonna get a ton of money, but he still lives in Russia

This decision was 95% money - 5% family.

If he could get 15M tax free here, he'd be here.

Has their been an official announcement saying that the NHL will send players to Sochi? If not, well Kovy just wants to play in the Olympics.

I think they said today might be the earliest. But Monday is most probable.

Kovalchuk is going to live like a king in Russia. He's probably going to be like a Russian Folk Hero now because he left the USA to return to the KHL. If given the choice, I would probably take more money to go be a legend and hero in my home country. It really wouldn't even be a hard decision, especially after I already played 10+ years in America. It is still a HUGE dick move on his part, but I get it.

Wuh.

As much as I'd love to have a home team here, I'd be hard pressed to cheer for them after hating NJD for so many years. Would be hard to get over the team that they were previously.

Jon Blum, who was drafted by Nashville using the first round pick originally sent to Philly in the Forsberg deal and then returned to Nashville in the trade for the rights to speak to Hartnell and Timonen before free agency, has signed with the Wild.

He was a highly touted prospect and a guy that I actually saw a lot of (back in the days when I actually paid attention to junior hockey). It's disappointing to see that he hasn't become a regular in the NHL, but maybe the change of scenery, and the opportunity to play for a team thin on D, will turn things around for him.

I was disappointed to see this tidbit on the Our Crap For Your Stars ... I mean, Rumors and Trade board, especially that it is a 2-way deal. Blum would have been a very interesting (low) risk to take for first-pairing Phantom minutes.

Nevermind, sign Colton TEUBERT. If possible on a 2-way-deal, though I doubt he'll accept.

Whoah, 5 already? With best wishes from Big E.

I remember one, he suffered from an Hartnell check, where he was on his kneees.

Still, guy is money and, if healthy, underpaid.

I think this should be a national holiday.

Kinda sickens me when athletes complain about only seeing $3 million for every $10 million on their contracts. You're getting paid ridiculous amounts of money to PLAY a SPORT that you LOVE.

I hate hate hate the amount of money involved in entertainment.
