I don't understand the fans that are down on Muzzin already. How could you reserve judgment against a player after a single season of play? Also, he could have used another year in the minors, but LA needed defenseman, so he earned a spot.

It's a good contract for a good, young player. Let's see how he does this season, then make a case for or against.

I mentioned that I'm not really down on him, but I see it as a bit of a gamble between who will be better, him or Martinez. When you sign Muzzin, Ellerby, and Schultz before martinez giving you 8-9 defensemen, something's gotta give, and if it's those three over A-Mart, I'm disappointed.

I wouldn't have minded this at all... ANYTHING to get the second coming of Rany Jones off the roster...

I think you can say hes overpaid an also like a player. I think he didnt deserve a raise this high is all. Hes only played one year. I can't remember exactly what he made last year but i think a million is pretty much double his pay for one year of service i think thats to much. Raises like this dont make sence to me and also why the next cba should sorta have pay raise maxs. especially for rfa contracts it would lead to more money available for ufas.

Unfortunately...AMart has the most value in a trade to fill a "cheap" forward hole... I don't see the first two with that much value (with Ellerby having the most value of the two)...and Schultz is rebounding from a bad season or two with the Caps...

I can see DS turning Sarge around and back to playing more stable D...

Steal of a deal. Hopefully the Flames can sign T.J. Brodie to something similar.

I thought Muzzin looked pretty good for the most part this past year. Give him time.

I agree, and most of his 'weaknesses' are improveable, imo. It's not like he totally has bricks for brains.

Pros:
-Hard shot, both wrist and slap, with a good release (i.e. no Doughty "Charging up mah fireball" slap windup)
-Good hands, and pretty deceptive with the combination of stickhandling, look-off passes, and decent skating out of danger
-Decent outlet pass
-Good size and reach, can throw the body and is strong in front of the net

Cons
-shot often finds shinguards in the worst way, leading to breaks the other direction
-needs to work on agility. has cement shoes when it comes to quick changes of direction or forwards shifting along boards
-needs to continue to learn to use size--big enough to pin people and throw big hits, but gets outworked/outmuscled/outskated frequently
-needs to learn how to take a hit--sometimes it looks like he forgets he's playing contact hockey.

HM: prone to huge mental errors (i.e. centering the puck in front of our net), but I'm going to write this one off as first-year learning experience

he's still a bit of a project but has big upside.

I love Muzz and thought he was not just good, but awesome for the kings this year. This is a steal of a deal and he's only going to get better.

Exactly. The amount of hate he gets from some is ridiculous. He was thrown into a situation with Mitchell, Greene and Martinez being injured and did well.

But +/- actually is a great indicator of a young Dmans play when it is compared to his peers who had the exact same opportunity to be assisted by the same lucky bounces etc.

That and when you consider that Muzzin wasn't paired with a 1st pairing dman much if at all during his rookie season but spent more time playing with Keaton Ellerby then Doughty or Scuderi.

Muzzin when compared to his peers had an exceptional rookie season. That said just like his peers he needs work in several areas.

Arbitration hearing might have put him over $1m, strictly because of his performance during the regular season, and he went to the playoffs. It's a good gamble, in that he'll likely exceed his contract value in his second year of the contract. Pretty low risk, medium to high reward.
