Kings unable to re-sign Penner

According to Jon Rosen (LA Kings Insider)

Dean Lombardi -
Quote:
It’s one of those cap things, and I guess it’s safe to say I have a limited amount of cap space left, and there certainly isn’t going to be enough to – I mean his requirements. I talked to him the other day, and I just told him. I talked to his agent a couple days ago and [said] ‘This is where we’re at. I’ve only got X amount left.’

Which team do you think will sign him? Oilers? Predators? Blue Jackets?

Better not be the Ducks. Hopefully Murray is smart enough to stay away from that lazy bum.

I think he will be a big loss for the Kings, they'll miss his big frame. Does this mean Clifford will now get more ice time as a 3rd liner. Not a 4th liner and hopping to different lines?

The title of the thread is a little misleading.

If the Kings wanted to sign Penner we could have. We just didn't want him bad enough to pay him anywhere near what he wanted.

It is his own fault. You can't put in 7 goals in over 100 games and expect to get paid like you did when you knew how to score. Great in the playoffs and wish him all the best but he would have had to have taken at or very near $1m for 1yr to stay.

Edmonton needs him. Their top 6 are a bunch of *******.

The question is does he want to go back to Edmonton? I'm not sure what San Jose's cap space is but id imagine he would rather sign there.

We have already replaced his big frame by adding a ton of size AND scoring already this offseason. No reason to bring him back really. We have kids on the farm who are ready to step in and can likely play better in each zone. Love Penner but he played himself off of the team really.

Yeah, Kings aren't going to try and free up cap space to retain him. If he wants to play for peanuts he can stay, but we won't miss him too much if he leaves.

Kings unable to re-sign him? Really? I thought a league minimum salary and an unlimited supply of pancakes would get it done.

If he wasn't looking to cash in on his limited success then I could see the Senators trying their luck

Well, I could see him going to MTL.

That maple syrup is awesome. He can get it right out of the trees.

He'll go to Anaheim or another Canadian market, like Calgary or Toronto.

Sens are my second favorite team. I'd cry if he signed there...and not because I want him back in LA.

I think he would be a solid addition to toronto. Another big body who has won a cup, brings leadership and is familiar with Lupul. I could see the leafs dealing liles than using that money on penner, something like 2 years 8Mil. Toronto IMO needs another forward, whether it be a 2nd liner and puts clarkson on the 3rd line or a 3rd liner and clarkson can play on the 2nd line. With penner I think the lineup would be:
JVR,Bozak,Kessel
Penner,Kadri,Lupul
Kulimin,Bolland,Clarkson
Mclaren,McClement,Orr

Solid linup that is capable of making the playoffs and perhaps make noice in the playoffs if the defense can play solid. Every line has a shooter and a net presence. That 3rd line could be a very good shutdown line capable of playing against all other teams top lines

I really hope they give red dog the 3rd line i think he deserves a bigger role on this team. Also with all kinda Russians ( at least 3 ) coming this maybe his only shot at moving up.

Bob Stauffer, Oilers insider and personal friends with Penner, said a few days ago that he has offers in the table from 4 teams.
- Obviously LA
- 1 of the teams is Anaheim
- 1 of the teams finished in the top 4 in the Eastern standings (Boston, Pittsburgh, Washington, Montreal). Personally I think Montreal makes the most sense to replace Cole.
- The 4th team made the playoffs

There is zero chance he ends up in Edmonton. MacT was not a fan when he was coach, now that he is GM and the current coach is even more demanding of fitness/hustle, Penner would be the worst possible fit. We could definitely use someone with his size, just not him.

With Kovy gone, I could see Jersey scooping him up. Clowe and Penner in the same night would be interesting to say the least - amazing if they're both motivated, downright ugly if they take the same night off.

I think Devils are happy with Clowe & Elias on LW. Ryder's really their only top 6 RW now and Zubrus would be their #2.
Jagr, Brunner, Hemsky & Heatley all make more sense.
