Brendan Smith's next contract

Okay, let's see what the common consensus is in here in this Smith-case.

I'll add this poll and you can take both scenarios in count.

- If the contract value is determined by arbitrator

or

- If Holland signs him before that to a normal extension

Pretty much it will be a 2-year deal like Holland informed, if the arbitration process will go through.

So how much money you think he will get?

Could Jamie McBain be good comparable?

He has 1.8 million 2-year deal now running in the second year.

If possible, could moderators merge this poll-thread to that another Smith-arbitration thread to keep this poll still alive? I think it would work great, a poll and that former and future discussion together.

Jake Muzzin just re-signed with the Kings. 2-years, 1.0 million per.

I think this contract pretty much did a superb favor for Ken Holland. Muzzin is a very good comparable, and now a dirt cheap.

Jake Muzzin, 6'2, left-handed, 24-year-old Canadian defenceman.
- Played his first full NHL-season at last season, only 11 NHL games before that.
- NHL total, 56 games, 7+10=17 points, 0.304 points/game.
- Playoff games included, 73 games, 7+13=20 points, 0.274 points/game.
- 17:10 min NHL-career average ice-time.
- NHL career plusminus +14.

Brendan Smith, 6'2, left-handed, 24-year-old Canadian defenceman.
- Played his first full NHL-season at last season, only 14 NHL games before that.
- NHL totals, 48 games, 1+14=15 points, 0.313 point/game.
- Playoff games included, 62 games, 3+17=20 points, 0.323 points/game.
- 17:35 min NHL-career average ice-time.
- NHL career plusminus +4.

Detroit's top scoring d-man in the playoffs, a rookie d-man playing over 19 mins (and over 2 mins SH) a night for a team that was within 1 goal of beating the record breaking Stanley Cup Champs.

Okay, Holland is so generous GM that he'll give 200k (20%!) more for Smith because of that.

These are arguments that Smith's agent will use in arbitration, which should procure a better deal for him than what Muzzin got.

I think he'll get like $2.15 million a year, even though I think he's worth league minimum at this point in his career and after what he showed us in the playoffs

you mean the Playoffs where he led our defense in scoring and played 19 minutes/game?

he actually had a pretty decent Playoffs, people are reading way too much into a handful of mistakes and not nearly enough into everything else he did

Yeah, there is also other player comparables, but this Muzzin comparable pulls their demands down. It's like an anchor. If there's one overpaid comparable, this levels it.

I think he'll get in the 1.5 neighborhood and will not go to arbitration.

Voted 1.6-1.99 but here is my disclaimer:

He gets what I voted on if he gets a 2 year deal. If we sign him for 3+ he creeps up into the 2-2.49 bracket based on potential and contract being more than likely backloaded.

Example first year 1.5, second year 2.0, and third year at 2.5. This way he would not be risky. And give him a performance laden increasing contract. Also a 3 year deal wouldn't be that risky cause if he falters on development we can let him go cause in 3 years with the prospect d men we have we could let him go. I would be uncomfortable with signing him to a 4-5 year deal but if we did it could turn into a bargain if he grows into the nhl and if we had to trade him say 3rd, 4th, or 5th year we could get a great piece for him.

I don't think they'd be going to arbitration if the number was 1.5. I think Smith's camp wants 2+.
