Not as simple as you're trying to make it. A lot of players that are from countries other than Russia have no problem spending their whole careers in North America... To play in the best league in the world.
Are they the exceptions or the rules?

75% of the players in the league are either American or Canadian. There aren't as many foreigners as you think.

How many players are there in the league who are Swedish veterans that aren't stars or at least top 6 / top 4? How many players in the league who are Russian aren't superstars or are young prospects?

When you look at the 3rd and 4th lines and players who are not Canadian or American, how many of them are young prospects being groomed to be stars? Hell, we had Pahlsson and even he decided he had enough with the NHL. And you know what? If he played in Sweden, he wouldn't be the best player there. He wouldn't even be the best at what he does. There are players in Sweden who are a lot better than him. There are players in Russia who would be better third line options than some of the guys that we have. There are many Swedes and Russians who don't play in the NHL because being on the third line in the NHL < being on the third line in their own country.

For stars, it looks like the NHL is the better option. However, for role players, the most picked option is to stay home.

Well it is like this I had a couple buddies that played in the Deustch League not Division mostly Div 2/3. And they were making around 100 grand a year (This makes me regret giving up hockey when I was 16 so I could work for a living).. So if you can make the same amount of money why do you need to travel far from home and learn all the other nuisances from living in another country it's not to say there is not potential for more earnings but if you can make nearly the same amount with less headaches in life you take that job 9 out of 10 times.
