Devils closing in on Damien Brunner?

Quote:
The Devils appear to be closing in on signing unrestricted free agent forward Damien Brunner, according to a report out of Switzerland.

Nicola Berger of the Swiss newspaper Neue Luzerner Zeitung reported this morning that Brunner “appears to be headed” to the Devils and “they’re doing a lot of background work on him right now.” The 27-year-old native of Zurich Switzerland had 12 goals and 14 assists in 44 regular seaosn games for the Red Wings last season. He added five goals and four assists in 14 playoff games.

He'd pretty much be guaranteed top-6 minutes with Kovalchuk out of the picture.

He's one of the better FAs still out there that can play top six.

True, I guess if they suck.. They'll just aim to draft the following year.

Interesting to see what the term is. Brunner is 27, curious to see if Lou sees him as a guy to build around or a supplemental merc.

One day the Devils will top paying these has beens a ton of money, blow it up, and rebuild through the draft...which they are good at if they retain the picks.

Seems like a good fit considering everything that's happened with them lately.

You think a Lamoriello knows what the word "rebuild" means ???

Love how Brunner is a has been, seeing how he has played 1 season in the NHL

We need someone to fill that spot and Brunner is the best option.

Will be interesting to see what Brunner does. While he would love to get top-6 minutes and sign a long-term contract that gives him security, I doubt he wants to sign it with a team that won't be contending for the next few years, now that he has finally made it to the NHL with 27.

If he stays healthy and has a good season, Brunner can score 30 goals.

If he thought he was someone to build around he'd be a Devil by now. Lou is trying to get the term short I bet.

Brunner and Ryder are very similar players. Devils would have excellent shooting options on the powerplay, if nothing else.

He's also fairly speedy and has an extremely high compete level. He wants the puck and he wants to score. A hard guy not to like.

I don't know, the "doing a lot of background work" in the link is what gets me. If he was signing him for 1 or 2 years Lou wouldn't be this thorough.

I really like Brunner's game. If the Kings had anything resembling room on the RW, I'd love to have him. He'll be a good pick up for New Jersey.

Really? Thought that his compete level/durability were big questions....maybe my view is scued after reading comment on the wings board....

They haven't been good at drafting in over 8 years. Their draft history the past 8 years is pathetic. Their entire scouting staff should be fired and Lou should retire.

Background work as is "you give us your passport and we put it in a safety deposit box until the contract's up!".

I think we've found it.

I think we've found the single post that most succinctly summarizes the insanity of the mentality of so many of the regulars here.

When a player who is yet to play his 50th nhl regular-season game... is already a has-been.

Definitely not a guy you build around.

He's bad defensively, but his compete level is still high. He was also misused on the point on the PP, and he was beyond ****ing terrible at that, so that might skew it a bit for some.

Nothing wrong with his compete level, he just sucks defensively.

Devils have enough defensive forwards to cover for a slacker or two, I think

If he can get the puck on net, I'm on board.
