Do you believe Brad Marchand deserves his negative reputation?

It's no secret people hate Brad Marchand, but does he deserve all of the negative attention? I'm talking about him being called a diver, a cheapshot artist, a whiner, and a dirty player.

The guy would be desired by 29 other teams so I wouldn't say he's hated.

He most certainly deserves his reputation but that's part of his game. Marchand is the kind of player that you hate when you watch him playing against your team but you could probably admit to yourself that you certainly wouldn't mind having him on your team - so basically, he's very effective at what he does.

It's an admired hatred. I'd love to have him on my team.

Mario was called "a diver".

Bobby Clarke was a "cheapshot artist" according to most opposing fans.

Gretzky was "a whiner," said some.

Messier was "dirty".

"Negative attention" is a very misleading term. Typically, when it is coming from opposing fans, it's an indirect compliment. As in the case of Marchand.

The guy is one of a dying breed of player who can be beat you with his stick skills and punish/annoy you while doing so. A few more of his ilk and a few less figure skaters would serve this league just fine.

I had Boston as my bandwagon team after the Rangers were eliminated and it was easy to like him while I was cheering for his team.

For a guy who low-bridged one of your players, I don't know how you can say its an admired-hatred...

As a habs fan I ****ing hate Marchand, but he's so good at being the dirty pest he is and I would like to have him on my team, especially when you take into consider his point production too...I deffs don't admire him though.

He deserves his reputation. He's a player who walks the line and crosses that line on occasion but he's not an overly dirty player like Cooke. One of those guys you hate to play against but love to have on your team.

He's a total ***** out there and he makes no apologies, and the worst is that he's one of those guys that will piss you off and then beat you on the scoreboard to rub it in...can't wait to root for him for once when the Olympics comes round again.

Marchand's reputation is well deserved, and having such a reputation I'm not sure how he gets away with so many thing uncalled.

Absolutely he's earned every iota of his reputation.

Having said that, I respect him for being a skilled pest. The diving needs to go though, it's bad for the game.

Oh, I know. And it was part of what made him great in his prime.

And, in the process, it offended the sensibilities of a lot of opposing fans. (Perhaps yourself included?)

Same thing with Marchand, though he is never to be compared with Messier. Take away his chippiness, and Marchand is another niiiiiiiice 20+ goal scorer, who offends no one and is easier to play against.

This version is exponentially more valuable to his team. Reminds me a lot of Pat Verbeek and even Theo Fleury, to a lesser extent.

Marchand is different than s guy like Burrows. Both dirty/divers but everyone would love to have Marchand on their team, not so much burrows

Absolutely deserves his reputation. That being said, I would love to have him on the Nucks because he is an incredibly effective player.

Cute little comment, but any GM/coach would love Burrows on their team.

By the time I started watching hockey Messier was close to retirement. But his elbows transcend eras If he had a time machine and was still playing like that he'd be the first player to be suspended forever.

Very true (bold). But that's a commentary on the current times (NHL) as much as the player. As for Messier's elbows: yes they were still sharp even when he was an old goat at the end.

I honestly think Marchand's entire game would be less effective without the edge he brings. I personally love his play.

Yes, and I'm a bruins fan.

Imagine if Sidney Crosby pulls the stuff that Marchand does. Crosby's already pretty hated around here, but it'd be off the charts if he was as much of a pest as Marchand.

That said he's still a skilled hockey player and the pest element usually plays in his favor.
