Craig Rivet. Someone has to bring this up...

I know a lot of you will call me the devil for bringing up anything negative about the habs but this is something that is starting to get serious.

Rivet all season has been taking dumb penalty after dumb penalty and just cannot pick up his defensive assignment. My eyes were burning watching Rivet on the leafs 3rd goal. Even at the end, it seemed like he forgot how to clear the puck and stuff...

What is wrong with this guy? Is it just temporary? and remember unlike souray rivet provides no offense either.

Yeah, he's having a rough start. So is Begin and Murray.

I liked the benching of Murray at least.

I would have to think it's just temporary. I mean, he's been in the league how long? It's not like one day he just woke up and forgot everything he ever learned. I agree he's been brutal in just about every game we've played so far, but all teams are going to have a few players who take some time to get going...that's just the way it is.

You forgot your sarcasm smile so I fixed it for you.

Of course you weren't serious, right?

Main problem with him is that he just has too much ice time, especially on the powerplay. No idea what he's doing there.

But, at least he tries hard and hasn't been injured at all in the last years. He also actually admitted he shouldn't have complained to the referee during the bruins game, because it put his team in trouble.

I'm dead serious.
I'll be honest with you I always hated the guy so maybe I'm as biased as the ones obsessed by Lats , Breezer or Ribs.

He's slow...he can't pass...he can't shoot...he doesn't win any battles along the boards and he's undisciplined.

He is, simply put, talentless.

I'll give him one thing, he has the desire to win. Sadly it's not enough.

At the end of the year we will only be able to bring back one or 2 out of Rivet-Souray and Markov and the way this is shaping out, Rivet will be th odd man out.

He can be very reliable when games are tight checked, system based flank fests because it allows him to play within his means. I think people are QUICKLY forgetting how useful he can be when he plays well and reaching for reactionary measures here. Well I shouldn't be surprised coming from the most detail obsessed neophytes north of the Atlantic.

Right because history only goes as far back as one week ago.
I'm as disappointed with the results as anyone, I just wish we all had the presence of mind to refrain from making bold statements like ''Omfgz trade Rivet for a 7th round pick now!!''

A lot of times that Rivet seems to be caught, it looks like he's outnumbered. Flip a coin, it seems more often than not when he's in these outnumbered situations he's gravitating to the wrong guy or getting caught in the middle trying to watch both but ultimately doing nothing, or he's getting boxed in or stripped when he's in the corners. It can look bad on the replay sometimes, but if you're caught outnumbered defending down low maybe it's just 50/50 at best that you pick the wrong guy, and right now, Rivet's luck isn't holding up. It might not hurt to ask sometimes why these outnumbered situations are happening? It's hard to see on TV sometimes, but I'm not sure if Plekanec and Koivu are doing a very good job these days coming in to help out, and for sure there are a few wingers on our team who don't come back often either. Including a certain right-sider who logs a lot of minutes. Playing with Souray is probably an adventure at times.

Not that I would disagree that Rivet is playing a bit below his capabilities so far. But it's not something that I'm particularly worried about, at least not insofar as it pertains to Rivet himself.

And incidentally, Rivet was extremely effective on the PP last season. Not that I advocate using him there when we seem to have other better options, but I don't think it's an unjustified choice in general.

He still wasn't as bad as Niinimaa.

I wish Dandy and Bouillon were back so we could bench Niinimaa and whomever else is on cold streak.

Do you guys think his pending free agency is bothering him ? I remember hearing that he hoped for a contract extension before the season started; obviously it has not happened yet.

Is it possible that there is a little envy too, seeing his 2 collegues soon to be UFA too, off to great statistical starts, while he is struggling not only to get points, but with his general level of play ? I'm just throwing it outthere...

One thing is for sure: the play he's giving us right now ain't making him closer to that extension he was wishing for

Maybe he's still bothered with his ankle remember against the Av's he didn't finish the game. Rivet is slower then usual it would make lots of sense that he's still not 100%

Rivet is not playing his best hockey this year so far but that is a stupid thing to say. Wow.

I've started a thread about it in pre-season, Rivet really struggled out there... and got a brutal response. As for now, I think Niinimaa is playing such terrible hockey that I can't even figure out about the other D's game.....

Maybe the pressures of playing in a "contract" season are getting to him
