His schtick is over the top to the point where one almost has to wonder if it's satire, but frankly I don't think he's that clever. He's the Rush Limbaugh of hockey with the distinction that Grapes actually believes the bile he spews.
The only honest man on tv giving his true thoughts not some politically correct mumbo jumbo. The guy is right on a lot of things no matter how ridiculous they sound. I'm impressed that he's 79 years old and he looks that good.
I don't need to respect him, I watch him for entertainment purposes purely. Even though he can't make his points as succinctly anymore, his general stances haven't changed, so my respect wouldn't have changed over the years much anyway.
Other than supporting his troops which I'll give him props for, I have zero respect for the guy. He takes his xenophobia and racism towards europeans/russians to the extreme. Then lights it on fire and rides it over the gumdrop rainbow into crazytown.
People get way, way too bent out of shape about him.
So he goes on TV and says stupid things. So what? If anything, the lightning rod he's created over the years has probably had the effect of creating a real dialogue about prejudice in the sport. It's the opposite of what he intended, but at least the conversation is happening. That's a good thing.
When he's not being a xenophobe, he's a pretty smart hockey guy. I just treat him like the drunken uncle at Thanksgiving who has some good pointers about where to buy beer underage.
