IN FACT perhaps they used the idea of playing with Kovy as a way to entice players to sign with the Devils.
That would be underhanded, but I wouldn't doubt it.

Interesting article about the possibility of Kovalchuk returning to the NHL.

Sure it would have made a difference. You just lost the only guy on your team that can score!
But yeah, if they did know, that would have been pretty smart to get some players to join. Would have been funny if they were all sudden $7M over the cap lol.

With the current mess the franchise is in I wouldn't think they want to be anywhere near the top of the cap.
They made have made the signing they did knowing full well that with Kovy leaving they would be at the salary level they wanted to move forward with.

Yeah, that's really dissappointing. Useless plug may end up taking the roster spot from a talented youngster like LW Tanner Pearson or C Linden Vey.

So Duchene signs an extension for $6.0 million per.

Stastny makes $6.6 this season.....ROR makes $5.0....MacKinnon makes $3.75 and Dutch makes $6.0 so that's $21.55 million tied up in centre's.

Edit: actually just noticed on Capgeek that Dutch will make $3.75 this season so I guess it won't be an issue.

ELC max salary is 925k. With the bonus cushion 925k becomes his de facto cap hit. Only when he earns bonuses does it become an issue and the bonus cushion takes care of that if they go over the cap. It's not a huge deal.

$16.6 million between 4 top 6 players can be swallowed. Penguins have more than that between two players next year. Add Letang and they're up to $25.5 million. Yikes.

Yea at first it looked worse than it really is on closer inspection. I think Pittsburgh is in an interesting position and are probably preying hard the cap goes up in 2014-15 as some are projecting. lets face it they didn't win this past year with the current configuration and they won't be able to afford as good a supporting cast under the new reduced cap.

Just listening to Dustin Brown on XM NHLNetwork and he negotiated his own contract extension without an agent. Impressive in this day and age.

That's a lot of money tied up on centers. Though they are moving ROR to LW, apparently, for next year.

I would think ROR will be on the block once the 1 yr 'no trade' condition expires. Sounded like the Avs wanted to move him to an Eastern team during his 'hold-out', but some of those teams have upgraded at center now. Jets were rumoured to be interested in ROR, but that's trading within the division now. Not impossible, just more unlikely.

That's why it was so painless, then. Dustin Brown wanted to stay there, Lombardi wanted him there. They negotiated a price and term, and that was it. There was no 3rd party interest there to muddy the water (****ing agents). Agents are nice because they protect the interests of people who can't protect their own rights, but they sometimes look after their own interests to the exclusion of the players, even though they're intrinsically linked.

Wow, Gagner signing 4.8 million per! We're screwed, now Little will be asking for the same if not more. This is not good.

Gagner outscored Eberle last year - and Ebs is getting paid $6 million this season. I'm sure the Oilers were anxious to avoid arbitration.

Low 1C/ high 2C guys get paid. Bozak, Zajac, now Gagner...and soon Little.

Wow the Sens signed Weirchoch to a 3 year 6 million deal, the guy hasn't even played a complete season in the NHL

I am quite happy that we got all of our young defense man locked up to what looks like great deals in comparison. Even Clitsome's contract looks infinitely better now.

Toews got a Olympic Games banner in Winnipeg.

Did you know about that? Where is it? Do you care? Good, bad? How was lunch today? Do you think Thiago was a needed addition to the Bayern squad? Why is 42 the answer for everything?

So... today is the day the Predators could trade Shea Weber, if they wanted to.

Thoughts on how long Weber is a Predator?

My guess is once Jones can handle significant minutes as their key defender, Weber will be moved. His contract is just too big and lengthy for the Preds, imo.

I would think within 2 years, he'll be moved.

I don't think weber goes anywhere.

I think he's a steal for another team now that Nashville has already payed over 1/3 of his contract. It was so frontloaded, it's cheap from here on out. It's only tough on the cap.

I wouldn't bet on Jones being better than Weber in only 2 years.

If Weber/Jones does becomes an issue I don't think it would happen until Jones is coming near the end of his 2nd contract.

What if a team like the Flyers offered good young players (say, the Schenn bros) - and cash - to Nashville?

The real hit is the cap advantage recapture, for at least a year or two, for a team trying to acquire him. Risk and $ goes down in a year, and more so in two.

But if he plays well, and the flyers are still desperate on D, a trade is a possibility, imo.

Absolutely. Jones wouldn't be the player Weber is, for years, and may never get there. I'm just suggesting when Jones can play 22+ quality mins, Weber could be moved to get out of that contract and bring a decent return.

Not needed, but they will be the big name squad going forward, I think. These super teams with leagues who have one or two large teams, going for European football only.

Send a message via AIM to Hammer Slammer
Pavelski signed for 5 years at $6m per.

I like how this is big enough news for the Gamecenter app to notify me, yet none of the Jets signings were.
