wmu coach andy Murray’s eyes lit up when talking about McKee, a Detroit Red Wings draft pick.

“Mike is working at forward and defenseman,” Murray said. “I think he’s an unbelievably fit kid and he can play forward or defense. He’s played defense the last two years. At this point, we’re looking at him as a defenseman, but he came here at 6-5 and weighed in at 255 and we think he’s going to play at 260. (Detroit Red Wings coach) Mike Babcock really likes him. I do know that.”

He was 31st in scoring among USHL d-men despite missing 22 of 64 games and being ejected (or in the box) for a lot of the ones he did play in.
Here is a comment from his coach indicating his importance to the team to have him on the ice rather than in the box.
“If this (six-game suspension, his sixth of the 2012-13 season) doesn’t get the message across to him … He sat in that penalty box for three goals against Fargo the other night. We need him on the ice for 25-plus minutes, as opposed to in the penalty box for 15 minutes.” — Lincoln Stars head coach Chad Johnson (Lincoln Journal-Star, March 2013) (he managed to play in all 5 playoff games score 4 assists and only(lol) had 18 PIMs)
He scored at the same PPG as Nick Jensen at the same age in the same league who is considered to have very good offensive potential..

Biggest player in the NHL in a not so distant future, hopefully.

Not even Chara at 6'9 weigh 260... and Bufyglien only weigh 260+ during the off season and is kind of fat.

That quote is from Andy Murray, WMU's coach.

If it's, like, mostly muscles (not like Buff...I'm pretty sure his body fat % is pretty high), then it'll be fine, especially if he's decently mobile.

Big Buff, has reportedly tipped in north of 300 bills. He is bigger than this kid, of course the big thing with McKee is he is almost pure muscle.

For as out of shape as Big Buff reportedly is it's amazing watch him play.

If this is the same Mike McKee, he doesn't look too fat from what I can tell in some of these pics.

If he can become more than a goon I like his chances. Going to WMU is a good way to make that happen, especially because college doesn't allow fighting.

That's a big boy right there. Would love to see him get a chance at the big club if he can become more disciplined on the ice.

Buff probably weighs more but hes fat. Mckee is supposed to be pretty ripped and skates fast. I read he isnt just a fast skater for his size but in general fast. Dont know if its true or not but I read it.

Stick him on the fourht line and let him forecheck on other teams D would be a nightmare, he is easily the biggest dark horse that I'm cheering the hardest to make the NHL

I think the best part of his development will come from having Murray as a coach. If he can soak it up, I believe he can be a game changer.

(not like scoring 50 goals or anything)

I beleive McKee was also team captain for Lincoln as well.

Makes me think of Matt Greene at UND

I'd love for McKee to turn into a Matt Greene type.

Greene is a good comparison. I remember when McKee was drafted he said his idol was Scott Stevens. A lot of the punishing hits Stevens dished out are no longer legal however McKee clearly enjoys scrapping.

He can potentially turn into a Big Buff type tweener who can play forward and defense. It will be worth following his development to see if he really has enough speed to forecheck. Hopefully he can get some work in as a net front guy on the power play. Buff repeatedly drank Luongo's milkshake in front of the net back when he was with the Hawks.

My guess is ideally he'd be a bottom pairing d-man who also gets significant time on the PK and maybe some second unit PP time if he can develop a good net front game.

260? Sounds like he has a severe case of hand to mouth disease. I kid, I hope this guy makes it to the show one day.

There were articles stating that Buff was 300 lbs at the end of the year. He hasn't seen 260 for 5 years. And I wonder why his knees always hurt....

Has anyone seen him play? I've seen a couple short clips and his stride looked pretty awkward but everyone here is saying he's a great skater.

You can't play hockey in the NHL @ 300lbs, no way was he 300 when playing, that's more his absolute max off-season weight.

In regards to McKee:
I still think his future, if it is with the wings, should be as a 4th line forward playing 5-8mins a night... Doubt anyone would dare to touch the wings' skilled player with him in the lineup.
