Kiprusoff retires

http://www.mtv3.fi/urheilu/jaakiekko...us-enaa-pelata

In nutshell: Says There is no intention or purpose to play next season.
Someone with better skills of translating finnish could tell more.

Wasn't this confirmed a few weeks ago?

Man, Google Translate's Finnglish is just too damn hilarious.

Anyway, I think that this is not necessarily confirmed until it is by the Flames themselves.

Pretty much. The thing that's new about this is that Kiprusoff called the Flames urging them to announce his retirement after they (Flames) had released a statement about Kipper's situation. I have no idea why they haven't made an official announcement yet though...

My assumption is they want him to make the announcement in person and he wants to stay out of the limelight.

A part of me is still hoping an NHL GM convinces him to play and we get a little something from him.

The Flames are holding off his retirement so they can suspend him and have help reaching the cap floor. Amirght?

I think Jay Feaster said they are waiting because both Gelinas and Conroy said as soon as you retire you regret it. So they are leaving the window open for kipper as long as they can.

In my opinion they are handling the situation very poorly and are going to end up offending Mikka in the process. If he is done, and says he is done, announce it and be done with it.

Meh. It's up to him to announce his own retirement. They don't owe him anything. And frankly who cares if he is 'offended'.

Because it closes the door on the opportunity of Kipper joining the front office

Kiprusoff never intends to join the Flames front office. He is already an owner of TPS Turku, if he is in the front office anywhere, it's there.

Never? Let's not pretend we know what's going on in Kipper's mind. Like you said he's the owner of the TPS Turku, all while playing 60 games a year in the NHL? Maybe Kipper has a really broad portfolio? Just because you own something doesn't mean you fully invested your time in it. Mikko and Saku Koivu are also owners.

Why would you want him to join the front office?

I don't mean to say he's a bad guy by any means, and he was a very good player for a long time, but nothing about him and what we know of his personality really screams "front office material".

If anything his reticence to make an official statement regarding his retirement reinforces my impression that you wouldn't want the guy in the front office.

He's not a charismatic kind of guy like Craig Conroy, Joel Otto, etc. who made Calgary his home and really wanted to stay here and continue to be part of the organization and continue to be involved in hockey. I just don't foresee him doing anything other than going back to Finland, buying a nice cabin in the woods somewhere (presuming he doesn't already have one) and living out the rest of his days raising his kids, kicking up his feet and going fishing every other day.

I think it speaks volumes about how he feels about the organization and the city. No announcement, no message to the fans, just "meh, YOU announce it for me". Sounds like he cant be bothered.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. He also couldn't be bothered to pick up his Vezina trophy. He is just reclusive. That is all. The standing ovation he got in those last few minutes against the Red Wings said it perfectly.

Is he really retiring?

G Miikka Kiprusoff, who turns 37 in October, remains an unknown commodity. Is the dude retired or what? Weve had conversations, said Feaster. Well have a resolution before the start of (main) camp. But its not something were prepared to discuss in one way or another right now, . . .

If Kiprusoff retires Flames are below cap floor! This would afford a new, bold GM a lot of room to maneuver. I hope this is what's happening.

It's a coin flip as if right now. They could announce it this morning, or he comes to main camp and decides before the regular season.

It's just the start of a rebuild so if anything being near the cap floor is a must for the inevitable pay increases 2, 3, 4, 5 years down the road.

No sense speeding it up because that doesn't usually pan out either.

If any moves are to be made for the Flames it should be to acquire young talent with medium to high upside and to stockpile draft picks.

But before any of that happens, Feaster needs to go. From an outsider perspective he is no better than Sutter imo.

Feaster has done a great job this summer. But he has made some questionable moves without a doubt.

He is much better than what Sutter became in his last 2 years here. His drafting has looked more promising than Sutter's ever did. This past year he has done several good moves turning a soon to be UFA Iggy into 1st + 2 decent prospects and moving the often criticized and overpaid Jbo for a 1st + 2 decent prospects. Not to mention him grabbing guys like Galiradi and Russell for basically nothing is another good move.

The problem with judging a GM within the first few years of their job is that their job is much more complex than just the here and the now. If his drafting works out the way it looks like it could then there is no reason to remove him.

New President of Hockey operations had this to say:
