This is excellent news. Definitely a long term replacement for Holmgren unless someone offers him a GM job first...but would he even leave Philly to take it?
Too many variables to predict the future including his family life and personal obligations. Remember, Bobby Clarke returned to the team not once but twice. It is different here because Hextall will seemingly have a large say in the current hierarchy.

Wayne Gretzky described Hextall as "probably the best goaltender I've ever played against in the NHL"

I believe that was in reference to his Conn Smythe performance?

Great move. Love his contributions to what he's done in LA, should bring a heavy-game point of view back to the Flyers.

That's easily my favorite story of goalie "swagger." Second place is Roy's wink, third place goes to Holtby's staredown. Interesting that they were all rookies at the time.

I don't think it's as 'in the family' as it usually seems. Hextall worked a lot with the Monarchs, and as a result when called upon they were ready to play. Voynov, Martinez, Muzzin, King, Lewis, and Toffoli in one form or another eventually supplanted veteran players. They drafted strong and used their affiliate in times need. This is not exclusive to the AHL.

Mike Keenan didn't tell either goalie who was starting that game until after the morning practice.

FWIW, the same scout who lobbied for the Flyers to draft Bobby Clarke did the same with Ron Hextall. His name was Gerry Melynk. Coincidentally, the Flyers got him as a player in a trade from St. Louis after their first season but he was diagnosed with heart problems and never played for the team. He was given a job as a scout and that is why he suggested drafting Clarke (diabetes) and Hextall (demeanor, personailty) both of whom were passed by other teams for different reasons.

I love Hextall and glad he's back with the organization, but he's so overrated by most Flyers fans

What does that have to do with anything?

Glad to have Hexy back here especially after being part of a winning team. Hopefully he brings some of that mojo back here.

As a player or as a front office executive?

Welcome home Ronnie ! Glad he is here in this capacity instead of in the nets ! a 2.95 GAA average in the playoffs would cause a MELTDOWN on this board !

This is wonderful news, especially because Homer is going to "lean heavy" on Hexy, this is shaping up to be a very solid off-season, I like that Hexy's has been out of Philly for awhile and will bring his experience with him from LA

Well, yeah but 2.95 was acceptable back then because of the high scoring that's what I was getting at.

I prefer using save percentage to gauge how good a goalie was/is. Goals against is more reflected on the team IMO.
