I put him in the UFA section based on the criteria that he'd already previously signed an NHL deal with Florida.

It's an AHL contract. I like what Montreal is doing with bringing in CHL stars and putting them in the AHL: Stephen MacAulay and now Duffy. Get a look at them over the year, then sign them to NHL deals.

A few teams have done the same thing, like the Rangers with Kelsey Tessier (still on an AHL deal) and Jonathan Audy-Marchessault (whom Columbus ultimately signed away from them), the Sabres (Corey Fienhage and, this year, Alex Lepkowski) and Chicago with Rob Flick (whom they signed, then traded away) and, most famosly, Andrew Shaw. I'm not sure why more teams don't go this route

Because if it's just an AHL deal, if the guy is any good another team can just sign him. You don't really lock him up until you do an NHL deal. There's nothing really stopping Duffy from signing with any NHL team (not just Montreal) either immediately, or as soon as his AHL contract allows him to.

Shaw was drafted by Chicago, so while he signed an AHL deal, he was still protected by Chicago due to having been drafted. No one else could have signed him.

Still, I think it's better than giving sub-par players NHL deals or re-signing NHL-AHL tweeners who are never going to make your team. Basically, you take some of the higher-scoring CHLers who aren't seen as NHL prospects, sign them to an AHL deal, if he plays well, upgrade it to a NHL deal. If he struggles, let him go at the end of the season. It's basically a no-lose proposition. If someone signs him out from under you, you lose a player who was never your property anyway.

Yea, but there's a "gentleman's agreement" not to sign players on AHL deals on other teams. Unless a kid really breaks out, you probably won't ever see another team swoop in for a AHL contract player.

Is it a better idea? Yes, I agree with you it is.

But your question was why don't teams do it more, and that's my belief for why.

I think it has more to do with the fact few players get the AHL only deal and those who do aren't offered an NHL/AHL deal anywhere else. As such, they already don't have skills (in NHL teams eyes) that are likely to translate to the NHL level. Of the rare few that do, they often do sign with the NHL team above (in Duffy's case, Montreal).

I don't think it has anything to do with some gentleman's agreement to not sign a guy. If a guy was looking like a legit NHL player, I don't think to many GM's are going to say "Yeah, he's good, but he's on Montreal's farm team, so they can have him."

I thought that would happen early in this season after they signed him to an AHL deal last fall.
