Koivu vs. Sundin

This matchup just doesn't work. Both are great playerrs but when Koivu is matched against Sundin, Mat eats his lunch. It seems to happen regularly... or is it just me?

Sundin absolutely dominates down low. He is impossible to move off the puck in the corners or behind the net. If Komo has trouble doing it then it is really unfair to ask Koivu to do the same job.

Both Sundin and Koivu play better with the puck than without it. Montreal needs a guy that plays well without the puck to work against Sundin... and it has to be someone who is big and strong.

Yeah, it was tough to watch Koivu desperately try to push Sundin off the puck...Mats is just so much bigger than him it's impossible.

Bonk?

Bonk's not much of a physical player, despite his size. I doubt he'd do any better of a job.

Sundin does that to a lot of players.

Kudos to Komisarek for the work along the boards though. Watching Sundin vs Komisarek was awesome.

There were a couple of times when the Leafs(Sundin) kept control for full minutes in the offensive zone, but I'm pretty sure it was Bonk's line that was out there with Johnson and Latendresse.

Sundin is a tough matchup for Koivu, but I thought Bonk had most of the minutes against him last night.

BONK played a terrible game last night in his own zone, as well as Rivet.

I understand that sometimes teams have bad games and come out flat, but against the fricking Leafs, division rivals. This blows me away. I can't believe that Carbo and Gainey are not gonna have a melt down over this disgusting performance.
SOURAY is our MVP though.

Sundin is one of the most underrated center in the league, and this is coming from a Koivu and habs fan. Few players have been that constant in their entire career, and that's playing with sometimes sub-par wingers.

As for yesterday, the habs simply didn't came to play as a team. Everybody was playing one gear slower than normal and the chemistry just wasn't there. Markov in particular was attrocious.

He did. Sundin was most noticeable when he exposed Koivu down low though, hence the thread I suppose.

It was a great battle indeed. Sundin is really strong on the puck, it impresses me a lot. I remember when I was a young kid, I use to go to the Colisée to watch the Nords play and my dad had tickets in the 5th row, I was scared of Mats because he was so big

well, thats why you barely see koivu against sundin anymore since we got bonk. Carbo tries to get bonk on sundin as much as possible.

Not that bonk is going to overwhelm anyone with his physicality but his size and positioning is an upgrade against bigger centers

At the time we got bonk, there were 2 hulking premier centers in our division in Thornton (although he doesn't use his strength nearly as much as he used to) and Sundin. This was the biggest reason for getting bonk because juneau was too small against these guys.

Sundin is one hell of a player but to be honest, I've never really liked his face. His head looks like a block of cheese.

No homo.

And Pierre Lacroix traded him for Wendel Clark. What an overrated GM Glad he's been fired, he can thank Rejean Houle for the Patrick Roy trade, but except for this move, he was a crappy GM. Just my 2 cents.

Sundin has a distinguished career and has long been a Habs nemesis, although he was fairly well contained by Bonk on Saturday. Head to head, he has held the edge over Koivu most of the time. I was always particularly nervous about line changes in which he would be matched against Ribeiro or virtually any fourth line center.
